Finally you all come out of the closet, of course the old design was more appealing.

who prefers the previous design?

Personally, I prefer this (old) one.

I agree with Madtony26 that the size of this new bulding must be larger than as it is planned. The taller it is the bigger supposed to be.

Nakheel Tower is 10 times better than Al Burj imo, looks to be 10 years ahead of it's time.

Well, I read somewhere (I think it was in this thread actually) that there will be around 30 or 40 buildings of 300+ meters around the Nakheel Harbour Tower, so my suggestion is: take the old Al Burj, make it 300 to 400 meters, and put it somewhere next to the Nakheel Harbour Tower, as a fill-up Because I still would love to see the Al Burj design getting build somewhere.

2.4km tower plan not yet on tallest buildings list

The 2.4km building image, which is the next contender of the tallest building in the world has been circulated widely but is not yet on the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitats (CTBUH) list, said the chairman.

"I don't think anyone has owned up to any building taller than Nakheel at present but I would not be surprised. There are always people who are dreaming but nobody has yet said that we plan to build that," said David Scott, Chairman for the CTBUH and Principal at Arup. "I got copied by five different people. I know the people who are involved but I am obliged to keep it a secret."

It is when a developer announces plans to build a tall building that the CTBUH starts to take note of the project. "We do not give them any real credibility till then. I know that there are other developers looking at other ideas," he said. "Certainly, the tallest building right now with planned construction right now is Nakheel."

Kingdom Holding in Saudi have made no formal announcement yet, he said though there have been media reports.

"I think that other people will consider more than a kilometre. How tall can one go? It is more a question of money and determination and while the technical aspects are challenging, it is not insurmountable," said Scott. "What I have seen is all unusual and different at Cityscape. It is my first time and it is very exciting to see the whole community enthusiastic in the Middle East."

According to him, Burj Dubai is doing a good job of spreading their knowledge on building a tall building. Besides, people do not design buildings for war, he said. "A tall building is a statement of your willingness to seek a peaceful future and appear vulnerable. Burj Dubai happened after 9/11. It was still saying that we wanted to do that."

Tall buildings also make economic sense. Scott said Adrian Smith, the designer for Burj Dubai explained at the World Architecture Congress, held at Cityscape that the perimeter of Burj Dubai paid for the building.

"People are concerned about issues in terms of fire-fighting, evacuation scenarios, blast protection and so on," said Scott. "Earthquake design is not an issue. The Council has updated the design codes for complex buildings because codes were not designed for such buildings and we would advice to think of first principles, while designing. But I must say, that this is applicable for areas with severe seismic activity, not Dubai."

I could careless what they build in Dubai. But I like the old design better. And that building looks out of place in NYC because it's butt ugly.

Darn. this is official then. Well, I guess the BD will get to reign as WTB for 7 or 8 years, at least...

Not sure what I think of the architecture, especially at the base. Sometimes I think architects are more concerned with what their designs look like on paper than what they would look like in real life. Well, that's been true for centuries but it's still a pity. Anyway, I'm not saying it looks bad, just not as awesome as I think a 1200m tower should look.

I hope we are going to be supplied with plenty of pics and info on the design and construction of this tower.

i hate to say this but it looks better in chicago than in dubai.
as for new york, the style and architecture is to modern and so it wont work. change the design and it will fit in new york.

Sweet little add-on for Google Earth in each city LOL . Not only nice model but the difference in scale is obviously mind-blowing. Sick.

Mayne warns Dubai set for ‘ecological disaster’

Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne has predicted that Dubai will become an “ecological disaster” if development there continues in its current direction.

http://www.bdonline.co.uk/story.asp?...00000001841ac5

The article's kind of confusing as he doesn't go into on how the rapid urban development will effect the physical features of the city or ecology.
