The building is fantastic, and so is Dubai, but I don't get where the demand comes from for all these buildings.

I don't get it either. Heard Fairmont might close its hotel there since they didn't do well in Dubai. Fairmont spokewoman told me recently.

Don't know where the demand comes from but I have an uncomforable feeling that it went to the same place the demand for the Chicago Spire went.

I checked the thread and this has not been posted yet

From: http://www.bachy-soletanche.com

The Dubai Nakheel Tall Tower is part of the Nakheel Harbour and Tower project and involves the construction of a new town on a 270 hectare site in the centre of Dubai. At a height of more than 1 km, when completed the Nakheel Tall Tower, the project’s central structure, will be the tallest building in the world.

In early 2008, Solétanche Bachy constructed three test barrettes and then, from April to June 2008, installed a 130 m diameter diaphragm wall including the capping beam. Last August, we commenced the construction of 392 barrettes to form the foundations of the Tall Tower. Additionally, Solétanche Bachy will be responsible for the construction of the pumping system, earthworks, a draining foundation raft and a concrete blinding layer. Foundation works are due to be completed by January 2010.

Whats a barrette???

Other word for the foundation piles.

A good find, but damn, 14 months for only the foundation, we have to be patient with this one.

They don't own the hotel, they just manage it so what might happen it will be changing of the management. The hotel was supposed to be a Sheraton Plazza, only during the late construction phase Fairmont took over.

Strange though because the hotel is very popular with MICE visitors, being just opposite the Exhibition Center and has a pedestrian bridge over the SZR highway, right in front of it.

Article says they have started with foundation in August. Its almost a year and a half until January 2010. One pile a day and they`re done before that And diaphragm wall is already done 130m in diameter - thats massive!!

But still, the foundation is gonna take no longer than maximum 2 YEARS???!!!

Maybe bachy solentache developed construction methods, who knows. Is no one allowed to take picture of the site like Incheon Tower or nobody cares?

Anyway here's further information on the engineering of the Nakheel tower:
