I kind of like this tower ! not sure if the towers around it are just to "fill in the gap" but they look to be between 450 - 550 meter hight !

Render from today's papers:

Also, it looks like it's been inspired by DXB's control tower :-)

Hey guys. You might have caught my attempted renderings of the Burj in that thread... Aside from now seeing that nice newspaper spread which has the first two zones without wind openings, I think I did an ok job to model the tower after 4 or 5 hours tonight.

Just doing again a *very rough* model to get the shape. The measurements I gauged though are astounding if they even turn out to be halfway true, such as:

Major Zones x5 = ~20-25 floors or 350 feet each
Transition Zones x6 (skylobbies and mechanicals) = ~4-6 floors or 100 feet each

That gets us to roughly 2,350 feet.

Smaller cylindrical tower on top = ~30-35 floors or 400 feet (maybe hotel)?

The bottom legs supporting the lower restaurant or observation deck seem to be halfway up in measurement from the base of the silver fins to their highest points. I put the central cone from base of the cylinder's roof to tip at 850 (yes 850) FEET alone O.o. The two uppermost decks I think I made 20 or 30 feet high (2 or 3 floors) and an estimated 280 and 200 feet wide respectively.

That puts my model roughly at 3,500 feet. Not too far off :p

The base of the tower I started with lines 150 feet long and core widths of 50 feet (combined with 20 foot wide right angles for open air gaps) forming the cross so that makes this nearly 340 feet (~110 meters) in diameter - well, for my rough guesses. Even attempting to model such a bulky structure per se started to show me to get the width to height ratios somewhat right that this is no "dinky" 100 foot wide tower. It's going to be BIG... BIG BIG BIG! You can definitely figure just from scale images alone that the bulk of the structure is as wide as the base of the Burj Dubai nearly for the whole height so yeah... quite large to say the least.

Time to crank this from 3ds Max into Crysis! In the meantime, here are some screenshots. Again, critique is welcome though the model was intentionally left untextured and is a basic somewhat fast creation.

I think Dubai is Coruscant and Tatooine, all within convenient driving distance of one another

some people are not liking the Star Wars-esque design... to me that's one of the advantages. i hope it gets built but you know, a lot is going to happen between now and the finishing date so i won't hold my breath.

What is the cost of the whole project (including the filler super talls next to it)?

Would this get built before Dubai runs out of oil, or all the money for the project is already in? (Heard rumors oil is gonna run out relatively soon with their output).

Here we go - sorry for the larger sizes if it moves the posts of the thread to the right too much. A couple shots of CAD then a lot of the Max model progression.

Everything you want to say, Everything you can possibly say, and Everything you've probably said about other Dubai projects have been said about the Burj Dubai 4 years ago.

In Dubai haters swallow their own words, just as those that said Burj Dubai would never be constructed.

PS. Not saying your a hater.

why not? maybe the future already started in dubai!
People always forget that Star Wars was not actually set in the future but "a long long time ago"... anyway, hate to be a pessimist but is starting this project in the middle of a world financial crisis and potential global property crash really the best idea? Ten years is an awfully long time for something to go wrong...

...

The tower, which will take more than a decade to complete, will be the centrepiece of a sprawling development state-owned builder Nakheel plans to create in the rapidly growing New Dubai section of the city. Foundation work has already begun, O'Donnell said.
...AP
So this is already under construction!!

er... what?

This is Al Burj, who told you the funding failed?? They simply changed it's location and gave it a redesign. This project hasn't been in the pipeline for as long as say te shard in London, or the SWFC in Shanghai. I wouldn't bet against this going up in Dubai!

OMG this is amazing.. I had a mini heart attack when I saw this for the first time today!!!

But a decade is such a long time... Burj Dubai doesn't that long.. this must be a real technical achievement... I really really hope it will happen..

maybe they can time it's completion with the DUBAI OLYMPICS 2020
