Behind the scenes: Nakheel's tallest tower plan.

Developer Nakheel is to trump rival Emaar Properties in the contest to build the world's tallest building, with the Dubai-owned developer unveiling plans for a tower that will dwarf the Burj Dubai.

Nakheel is poised to build Nakheel Harbour and Tower that will be more than one kilometre high, as part of a $38.12 billion project that will include the world’s first inner city harbour.

This video gives you the behind the scenes story of the project with interviews with CEO Chris O'Donnell, a look at the company's launch night for the ambitious development which was held at the Atlantis resort in Dubai and attended by Hollywood couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jone plus there's a 3D view of how the tower will look when complete.

The development, located at the intersection of Sheikh Zayed Road and the $11 billion Arabian Canal currently under construction, will cover an area of more than 270 hectares and eventually house more than 55,000 people.

The project will take more than 10 years to complete, but with some stages coming on line much earlier.

Nice video! That is really exciting!

Are Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones are ones of these inventors or just special guests for this event?

What do they mean by this development being the first city in the world to have an inner city harbour??? There must be hundreds of cities that were built around their harbours - London being a classic example.

For me it means the harbour is nearly integrated in the Nakheel Harbour Tower. Just have a look on the renders.

Constructing buildings around a natural harbor and building a harbor inland in an artificial lake connected to the sea with an artificial canal, are not the same thing.

I had a peeky at the front page again. Doesn't seem like much of a harbour to me, just a parking lot for even more luxury yachts. If they had ferries, cargo ships, etc etc running out of it, maybe... Seems like a planning gimmick to me, anyway.

Manchester/Salford did the artificial canal/lake thing a couple of centuries ago. The Manchester Ship Canal allowed some of the biggest ships of the day to sail into the heart of the cotton mills to deliver cotton and distribute the finished cloth to the world. It really was a weird experience to see a huge ship moving through the terraced streets of Warrington where i grew up.

I really don't understand how they can call this the world's first inner city harbour. Venice & Amsterdam's warehouses were the skyscrapers of their day and they seem to have rather a lot of canals and inner city ship activity. Totally agree with the post that said that inner city harbours is the norm. I can hardly think of an historic major city that wasn't built around a harbour of some sort. Even the ones not on the coast e.g. Paris, Cologne, Birmingham

It is thread not threat.

Some people still find it is hard to believe that great tower is under construction. It is seem like many people around the world are not used to that fast and lack of "anything is possible" attitudes.

Some of you guys need to remember to take your blood pressure pills!

So what should the penalty be for asking a repeat question? Death? Dismemberment? Solitary confinement? Banning for life?

Too bad, there arenít any high-rises around NT yet to get a more birdís eye view of the construction site. The current pics are not showing the true scale of the operation.

Nakheel Tower work halted for year

DUBAI // Construction work on the Nakheel Tower – a building that would soar more than 1km high to be the world’s tallest when completed – has been stopped for a year.

“Further work on the foundations of Nakheel Harbour and Tower will commence in 12 months,” said a Nakheel spokesman. “The foundation works are likely to take approximately three years to complete.”
A senior project manager said several employees working on the Dubai project had been laid off because “work has stopped until further notice”.

The stalling of the tower is the latest in a string of delays on Nakheel’s most prominent projects as a result of the slowdown in the property market.

Other developments that have been affected include the Trump International Hotel and Tower, Frond N villas, and Gateway Towers, as well as parts of the Waterfront and Palm Deira.
In late November, the company laid off 500 employees, about 15 per cent of its labour force, “in light of the current global market conditions”.
