The stalling of the tower is the latest in a string of delays on Nakheel’s most prominent projects as a result of the slowdown in the property market.

Other developments that have been affected include the Trump International Hotel and Tower, Frond N villas, and Gateway Towers, as well as parts of the Waterfront and Palm Deira.

In late November, the company laid off 500 employees, about 15 per cent of its labour force, “in light of the current global market conditions”.

I guess someone will need to tell the workers if this is really on hold huh?

Thanks for the update Imre. My net is that it's not official yet. Press releases aren't always accurate.

I can find at least 8 sources where it says nakheel tower is delayed for 12 months. All which are very reliable sources.

The Associated Press is trustworthy, so is Reuters, the biggest news service in the world.

But people here on this forum seem not to trust Nakheel itself. And they are the ones that issued the press release.

More like "All which are the same story repeated in various outlets".

I can't understand why you all are so touchy about the NHT being on hold. It wasn't to be finished in the near future anyway. And as far as I am concerned, it was quite rushed as a project, not advertised or thought out enough. The cancellation is logical and for such a project, even necessary. We still have Burj Dubai

Right. This is so logical to cancel allready started project But its not going to be canceled. If press releases tells true it is only going to be delayed, and for concrete pice of time (1 year)

Yeah! Planning only started in 2003 when it was known as the Al Burj.

The Atom Bomb took less time to plan and develop than Al Burj/ Nakheel Tower.

Anyway even if it is on hold you are right that we still have the Burj Dubai.

Nakheel said said that they will not start the piling now, but that doesn't mean the contractor has to abandon the site immediately: They have the shoring work to complete first.

Actually the atom bomb took 40 years, 1905 to 1945 and all but the last year was for the atomic theory development.
The fact that the project will probably go on hold indisputably proves the bad timing for it. You cannot expect to keep making projects for a real estate market when you can see that demand cannot catch up. I actually thought that this will never be built, and I was greatly surprised when it went U/C. But maybe UAE meet their match after all. Hope it gets unstuck eventually, although after that long the design will almost not be the same.

I agree actually. It was bad timing. However in hindsight it's hard to predict the future. So was it rushed? Maybe, but I have my doubts. Otherwise they would have waited and planned more had they known that the economy issues would creep into Dubai as soon as they did if ever.

BTW I was talking about the US Military development of the Bomb. Sure they had information, but putting it all together normally would take some time. But they still managed it in under 5 years.

You guys do realise that the current recession will be long over by the time this project will be completed, right? Also, the more development and completion of infrastructure takes place in Dubai, and the more businesses settle in Dubai, the more attractive yet that Dubai will become. It's not Dubai that you should worry about, but Abu Dhabi, Kuwait City etc... they're the ones playing catchup, and have the greatest chance of failure (whatever that is...). But this recession will only slow things down.
