How do you even kill palm trees?
I didn't even know that they could die.
I'm sure breaking just about anything in two is enough to kill it.
including skyscrapers developers' contracts

No, it hasn't been broken in two, it just dried out. These are not date-palms (Phoenix dactylifera), but Trachycarpus fortunei, a species that needs much water. Dubai is not just a big cluster of supertalls, it's also a huge, huge waste of energy and water...

Cheers

Sorry to bump a very very dead thread, but I just received an email today stating that Dubai's government and Dubai World have reached some settlement on the ~$23 billion of debts. Apparently a government committee is helping the company restructure for profit and Nakheel will be made a seperate entity.

Where's that link... ah found it. http://www.ameinfo.com/241907.html

While it's still crazy speculation, do you think this may mean the tower would eventually be built?

Nakheel could definetly revive a project for a worlds tallest building at some point in the future. But I doubt it will be this specific one. They've got a lot of other major projects already in the works to complete.

An easing of its debt is a good sign for the long term health of the company. Who knows, maybe in 5-10 years they'll take another shot. But I don't see it happening in the short term.

i agree there has to be more money and work into the islands before he can start another project like this again, but in future it would be possible

Hi all.

Hi Helghast.
Good find. Interesting read. Barrettes instead of circular piles - very interesting - 168 completed too ...

Hi Dennis.
Hopefully in the future this project will go ahead.
Just about half the barrettes in the ground already.

BK will be the WTB for the next 15-20 years. Nakheel and Dubai will need to restucture budget first. More than likely to happen is Dubai loaning out money to others and collecting on interest for the next dozen years to fund this. Either that or build REALLY slow...which would take 20 years anyways. No shot of restarting this project this decade guys. Not only do they not have enough money to do it, but, the world really doesnt need it right now, imo.

"Cancelled" is the wrong word, "discontinued" would be more appropriate, as there indeed never was an official statement as to its cancellation, it's simply been shelved quietly.
