If Tower Hamlets become's a city next year will London be unique in that sense of having 1 city inside another?

Well actually London already has two cities inside it - the City of London (the square mile) and the City of Westminster. Also I'm not 100% sure London as most people conceive of it (i.e. Greater London) is even technically classified as a city.

You are bloody mad! London has an awesome skyline, multiple centres, a mix of historic buildings, spires, gothic towers, scrapers, bridges, stadiums, arenas, i could keep going!

London has the most varied and awe inspiring skyline of all major cities! And im not even a Londoner before you retort!

I would counter argue that skylines in the States are bland, boring and predictable, i guess its because you dont really have any history do you?

What's boring and predictable is every brit's response to any criticism leveled against their beloved London skyline.

Well, guess what? Consensus on this website would be that NYC and Chicago both wipe the floor with London's skyline.

its my personal opinion that people who criticize the London skyline have no idea of how hard building any tall buildings in London actually is. its probably the hardest big city on the face of the earth to do it in. big, world class cities with a relatively small amount of tall buildings is pretty much an established theme across Europe.

now, I am not being defensive, so I will just come out and say that in reality London's skyline is (in terms of size anyway, in terms of architectural uniqueness and quality I believe there is no better city in the world) not as good as those of New York, Chicago or other world cities like Tokyo or Hong Kong, as it probably should. BUT, what I am saying is, those who know the actual difficulty of high-rise building in London would understand that there is a reason (or should I say reasons) why. the list of reasons stopping a world-beating skyline in London are to numerous to mention, and the history of London also is a contributing factor (for example 5 years of constant bombing of the city in WW2, but there are many more examples as I said)

cities like New York and Hong Kong stand as proud, striking symbols of humanity's extreme building triumph. London's building triumph is one of a different kind, for it has enough office space to tie with New York for the rating of world financial centre, but given its comparative lack of tall's, much less office space. London stands as a triumph of efficiency and great engineering. London has the ability to build smaller, lower office buildings which equal much larger ones for overall output value. its the impressive efficient engineering of London's buildings which make them impressive (for me anyway, being an engineer). Unique and beautiful modern and historic architecture is what London's about. its the individual tower that is valued for aesthetics, in North America it seems to be a concentration of the overall skyline.

to put it simply, London's buildings are designed to look and be better at street level, where most will see and appreciate them from, getting the most out of each building. cities like New York are better seen from a distance and while at a distance they are much more impressive than London, I personally believe London is much more beautiful at street level. for me, I criticize neither, instead I praise their individual triumphs and styles.

What's actually boring is the stereotyping of a whole nation's people on the comments of a few trolls and overly patriotic people on the internet, who in many cases (e.g. SO143) aren't even ******* British!
