- Long overdue, I would say. The Trivandrum Zoo is the oldest public zoo in India. The only other zoo that existed at the time of its founding was the private menagerie of the Mysore King, if I remember right. It is also one of the very zoological gardens in the center of a major city. Alipore Zoo in Kolkata is the other one that comes to mind.

A new tourist spot
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For years now, the two ponds within the Museum have been dying a heartrending death. Without care, their natural beauty had faded. Visitors had long back stopped throwing them a glance. But finally, it is back to good looks. The restoration and rejuvenation work undertaken by the Museum Directorate with the help of Costford has saved their life. Minister for Culture M A Baby will inaugurate the restored ponds on Saturday, at 9 am. According to Museum Directorate officials, the work was started almost a year ago. Initially, the Central Water Resources Board was asked to prepare a project report for the restoration. Later, taking the environmental aspects also into consideration, with slight modifications, Costford was handed over the responsibility of bringing the ponds back to good health. ‘’After the restoration, the water capacity in the ponds has increased. We have made them accessible to visitors and beautified their premises, keeping the ecosystem intact,’’ says Museum Administrative Officer Mustafa Pasha. The clay that had deposited itself in the waters was removed. And so were the African weeds which were eating into the beauty of the water bodies. According to Costford officials, removing the one-metre-depth clay has increased the water capacity by folds - almost one-crore litre capacity. Many drains bringing rainwater have been connected to the big pond, which has more recharge capacity. A filter tank to store the additional water has been set up. ‘’We have not disturbed the ecosystem of the place, instead, only made it beautiful. It will be noted by visitors now,’’ says Saajan of Costford. Visitors to the Museum and Zoo can now take rest beside the ponds enjoying the scenic beauty. Two waiting sheds have been built here in wood for walkers. Varieties of bamboo, grass and other plants like ‘ramacham’ have been planted on the premises. The ponds now have a vast collection of white lotus too. Two decks, in concrete, from where visitors can have a good view of the ponds have also been built. They almost run to the middle of the pond, giving a different experience. Many varieties of fish have also been introduced in the ponds, to act as natural cleaners. A total of ` 98 lakh was estimated for the project. However, the total fund was not utilised because of which extra beautification works were carried out on the premises. The ponds and their premises have played host as shooting locations to many films in the past. Maybe, those glorious days would be back once again. Source |

Thiruvananthapuram Zoological Park and Museum
Thiruvananthapuram Zoological Park, one of the first Zoological Park's in India, established as an annexe to the Napier Museum, by Maharaja of Travancore, in 1857. The most interesting fact is that, this "Jungle" is situated in the heart of the city, adding lot more greenery to the evergreen city......
