ISC-2012 topper eschews extra tuition
Winning is second nature to this teenager. The neatly lined-up array of trophies in the showcase of her house is testimony to this. Singing, recitation, elocution, essay writing — you name it and Kalyani Vishnu can show a certificate she won for the event.
But, perhaps, what comes most easily to this achiever is academic excellence. Kalyani made her school — Christ Nagar Higher Secondary School, Kowdiar, Thiruvananthapuram — and her city proud by emerging as topper in the ISC Examinations-2012. But this isn't the first time she has done it. Two year ago, she was the national second-rank-holder for the tenth standard ICSE examinations. In the ISC exam, Kalyani bagged a total of 495 marks out of 500, including cent per cent marks in three subjects — Maths, Physics and Environmental Education. While Rohan Sampat of Dubai Model High school stood overall first in the ISC-2012 exam, Kalyani was topper among the students who wrote the exam in India. “Although I expected full marks in these subjects, I did not imagine that I could be the national topper. It is all because of the support of my teachers and my school,” said the elated girl. Kalyani said she was most thrilled by her English paper marks, of which she scored 97. “Even in the model examinations, I could score only above 85 for English. I think this became crucial for my overall performance,” she said. In this era of tuition-fatigued teenagers, it is quite amazing to note that Kalyanai achieved her feat without any additional coaching or tuition. And she has a very sensible reason for choosing not to go for tuition classes. “I don't know how students manage with all those extra classes and homework. Although my teachers and friends initially coaxed me to go for tuitions I decided against it after attending a few classes. I realised with the time left after school hours, I could very well do my lessons myself instead of spending time in yet another classroom,” she said. Kalyani's father, T.P. Vishnu, says it is this confidence that made her daughter come out with flying colours in the examination. “Frankly even we were a little apprehensive when she said that she was not going for tuition classes. We let her make her own decision and it has paid off. It is systematic studies and hard work that has helped Kalyani score high marks,” said the proud father. Mr. Vishnu is a deputy chief engineer with Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) in Kozhikode, while her mother Suma is a lecturer in Chemistry at Fatima Matha College, Kollam. Kalyani, who has appeared for the engineering entrance examination, says that her next focus would be finding a seat for an Electronics and Communication Engineering course in a top college within Kerala. Asked if she planned to join the Civil Services or pursue academic research in the future she replied that she was yet to plan that far. “I think I still have ample time to decide my career course. For now the focus would be to get into a good engineering college,” a relaxed Kalyani said. http://www.thehindu.com/news/nationa...?homepage=true |

Britain shows interest in tying up with Kerala B-school
Thiruvananthapuram: Britain is keen to forge ties with the city-based Asian School of Business (ASB) for conducting collaborative studies in areas like climate change, agriculture and energy, director of the premier B-school said Thursday. The proposal for tie-ups between British universities and the ASB came up for discussion during a meeting between British Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai Mike Nithavrianakis and ASB director S. Rajeev here Wednesday. ‘The British Deputy High Commissioner visited the ASB campus and talked about introducing us to British universities which have specific competencies relevant for the ongoing 'Emerging Kerala' campaign,’ Rajeev said in a statement. Britain is also keen to increase the engagement of its universities and companies with India and is looking for collaborations and tie-ups, he added. ‘Britain has shown interest in bringing its students to India for working in specific competencies which are in tune with the objectives and initiatives of the 'Emerging Kerala' branding campaign, such as infrastructure, healthcare and ICT,’ said Rajeev, who is an alumnus of IIT-Madras and the Stanford Business School. During the meeting, the UK official showed interest in agriculture and rural areas and mentioned the research work being carried out by British Universities in the area of climate change and its impact on agriculture. The ASB has already forged a string of tie-ups with some top-notch universities like the Kansas University in the US and Instytut Organizacji i Zarzadzania W Przemysle (ORGMASZ) of Warsaw (Poland). ‘We are keen to explore potential tie-ups. A tie-up with some major British university will be a testimony to the high degree of academic excellence of ASB,’ said G. Vijayaraghavan, member secretary, ASB Board of Governors, and member, Kerala State Planning Board. |

TRINS is now a IB affiliated school, which means the kids can now graduate with IB diploma that is a bench mark qualification set by renowned universities.
This is something that will make Trivandrum in level with Bangalaore and Chennai in terms of school education. This will certainly set the stage for the movement of more professionals/businessmen to the city. It would be awesome if they could offer few scholarships to brilliant local kids as well. |

It is indeed amazing someone sitting far away in Delhi could unmistakably sense the knowledge potential of TVM. The below report says Sam Pitroda will have a meeting today with Govt. and discuss details of the proposed knowledge city. I am sure the first proposal will be to shift that to azeekkal or somewhere else
![]() TVM has made leaps in medicine, biotech/medical research, basic science, rocket science, defence research, and what not? At least we have a Sam Pitroda to sense this in Delhi. http://news.keralakaumudi.com/news.p...722a50836f2fee |

It is amazing considering the fact that celebrity coaching centres are located near to Kochi or further north. |

The vast majority of these students from Trivandrum who secured a good rank in medical entrance must have also gone to these celebrity coaching centres especially at Pala and Thrissur.

Fall/Quality reduction of Tandem,Universal and Zephyr entrance coaching centres has given rise to Thrissur and Pala coaching centres. Bright Students from other district take admission in schools of Thrissur and Pala. Schools provide them with Hostel Facility at a decent charge. They join entrance coaching centres for evening batch.Schools even work according to the timings of the entrance coaching centres. Some schools even drop their students to these coaching centre(s) at evening. Repeating students prefer, the hostel run by these tutorial(s). It is a win-win situation for all !!!! |

I am afraid it is not fair to link ‘Knowledge City’, which is in a different plane altogether in concept and scale with the ‘entrance’ coaching centres. We are looking forward to broaden our base as an established eco system for Space research, Avionics, Rocket Science, Bio Technology, Earth science studies, Animation & Visual Graphics etc, with the establishment of ‘Knowledge City’ and not mushrooming of ‘tuition centres’.

Thiruvananthapuram ideal location for knowledge city: Tharoor
Thiruvananthapuram: Batting for his home constituency, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has said Thiruvananthapuram is an ideal location for setting up the state government's proposed 'Knowledge City' project. In a letter to Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Tharoor has said the city has the most developed knowledge ecosystem in the state with over a dozen world class institutions of higher education, research and development. Important institutions like Technopark, Technocity, KINFRA, VSSC, LPSC, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), National Institute of Inter-disciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) and several medical institutions are located here, he added. Tharoor has been elected to Lok Sabha from here. The creation of knowledge economy would bring about a competitive advantage in a frontier area of economic activity which Kerala requires for embarking on a viable development path to match the needs of the people, Tharoor said. Pitroda induced development model. At least this man gives directions to the confused political class, and most importantly it looks like they listen to him. Hope it works that way. |
