Trivandrum Colleges going online

Finally, our colleges are moving into the digital age. The process had started two years ago at CET as part of the World Bank-funded TEQIP project and is now being moved out to the other colleges under a GoI scheme.

Nine engineering colleges to be made ICT-enabled

G. Mahadevan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A project of the Department of Education to create 100 ‘technologically enhanced classrooms’ at nine engineering colleges to improve standards of classroom teaching is likely to be launched by the end of June.

The project has been drawn up in response to an 11th Plan initiative of a ‘national mission for education’ of the Government of India to digitize and network all educational institutions in the State. Among the objectives of the national mission are the creation of e-books for all subjects, interconnection of all colleges and universities, digitization of learning material produced so far and propagation of digital literacy. The outcome is expected to be a national knowledge network, complete with digital campuses consisting of digital classrooms.

According to officials of the Department of Education, the State will be ready to log on to the knowledge network once it becomes operational. The 100 classrooms that would be modernised are spread over nine government engineering colleges. The plan is to install computers, projectors and sound systems in these classrooms. “The classrooms should accommodate 75 students, a podium for the instructor, a black /white board, a personal computer or a laptop, LCD projector and a speaker phone. The room should be powered through UPS,” the introduction to the project reads.

Twenty-eight classrooms at the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, have been selected for the project, 18 classrooms at the Government Engineering College, Thrissur, 12 each at the Government Engineering College, Kannur, and the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam, six classrooms at the Government Engineering College, Barton Hill, and the Government Engineering Colleges at Kozhikode, Palakkad, Wayanad and Idukki.

...indeed great to hear the World bank funding for our colleges...
...if we could have these type funding for our state universities, it would have been simply great...used to dream of having our Kerala university on lines with central universities with fulfledged campus at Kariavattom...atleast this would have reduced the political activities due to K.U and univ College in the core city area....

Years back there was a move to make our prominent colleges like the:
Women's, University College etc as autonomous institutions. If this was the situation, these colleges might had got huge sums from UGC and other agencies as special grant. But the teachers & students agitated against the move and nothing happened.

ISRO to co-host Science Congress in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram (PTI) The 97th Indian Science Congress will be held here from January 3 to 7 next year with Indian Space Research Organisation and the University of Kerala co-hosting the event.

The decision to hold the conference of Indian scientists here was finalised today at a meeting, which was attended by ISRO Chairman G. Madhavan Nair, state Education Minister M.A. Baby, Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre K. Radhakrishnan and Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University A. Jayakrishnan, a release from Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre said.

For hosting the event, Mr. Nair offered an amount of Rs. 5 crores as ISRO's contribution. A commensurate amount would be provided by the Kerala University and state Government, it said.

Eighteen functional committees have been formed for the conduct of the event.

The first Indian Science Congress was held in 1914 at Kolkata (then Calcutta). The 34th Science Congress was held in 1947 with the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as its General President.

This is the first time that the Kerala capital is hosting the event.

Budget sends scientists’ spirits skyrocketing

Express News ServiceFirst Published : 07 Jul 2009 01:01:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 07 Jul 2009 09:46:01 AM IST

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Monday heard some happy news flowing from the Parliament to the city, rocketing the spirits of the scientific community. The Union Budget presented by Pranab Mukherjee bestowed a considerable sum on the scientific research institutions in the city, including the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and the Indian Institute of Space and Science Technology (IIST).
While the FM granted a whopping Rs 613 crore to VSSC, Rs 175 crore was allotted to IIST. The Liquid Propulsion System Centre, Valiyamala, has been granted Rs 285.93 crore and Indian Space Research Organisation-Inertial System Unit (IISU), Vattiyoorkavu, has been allotted Rs 30.84 crore.

The IIST, which is training its third batch of aspiring space scientists, is in the development path and the allocation has definitely lifted its spirits.

Said IIST Director B.N. Suresh, ``The amount will be utilised for the infrastructure development of IIST.’’ The IIST is currently functioning from its temporary campus at Veli, while a permanent one is being developed at Valiyamala.

Wondering whether the outer ring road will be connecting Vidura IISER and Valiyamala IIST ..not sure where Valiamala will be on this map! The map also says Vithura is closer to Attingal than TVM central?

Babu, both Palode & Vithura are equidistant from Trivandrum. It comes around 32 to 33 km. Trivandrum-Nedumangad - 16 km plus, NDD to Palode/Vithura- 16/17 km.

The roads to Palode & Vithura bifurcate at Chullimaanoor - 3 km from Anad.
The SH-2 to Thenmala/Shencottah will go towards left via Palode, while the one to Ponmudi/Vithura/Tholicode will turn to the right.

However, both these 'Y' roads are connected again through another road.

From Palode, there is a road going to Vithura via Peringammala, Iqbal College & Thennoor. This will merge with the Nanniyode-Vithura road (via Chettachal), just before the Vithura Junction.

The original Jursery Farm is located on the Bon Accord road (there is also a proposal to have a road to Ambasamurdam by extending the Bon Accord road - Nanjankode, Pappanamcode teamkalkku venbam enkil boanakkad road ennu parayam).

The Jersy Farm has an extension centre / annexe at Chettachal on the Vithura - Nanniyode road. I am not sure where exactly is the IISER coming up.

In any case, the distance to Attingal to Vithura must be more than 32 km. Attingal-Venjaramood (13km), Venjaramoodu-Pullampara-Vellanchira-Aruvippuram-Perayam-Palode (15 + km) and Palode to Vithura (12 km).

Another option is Attingal-Karete-Pangdoe-Kallara-Bharathnnur-Palode-Vithura. But this must also be long.

If the IISER is coming up at Chettachal, then the distance from Trivandrum & Attingal to "Vithura" shall be same.

Valiyamala is very difficult to identify in a macro map.

It lies very close to the Nedumangad Municipal limits. Just 6 or 7 km from Nedumangad bus station on the Karippur-Tholicode road.
Also Valiyamala can be reached via Anad & Chullimanoor.

However, from the drawing I am interpreting that the outer road (red) passes close to IISER & the inner road (pink) close to IIST. But the exact alignment of the road might vary, due to geographical, religious, social & political reasons.

Thanks Jaleel for the info. It will be nice if the two instutues fall on the same ring road ... we could also plan future institutes on this road as well for easy accessibility.

You had asked about the campus-scapes of my Institute. I had posted some pictures in SSC page (see link http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=881862 I will upload more pictures when time permits.

State to take over Heart Foundation

New entity to be called Institute of Diabetes and Non-Communicable Diseases

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thiruvananthapuram: The State government has decided to take over the struggling Kerala Heart Foundation (KHF) and merge it with the Indian Institute of Diabetes (IID), which is being developed as a national research institute. The new entity will be called the Institute of Diabetes and Non-Communicable Diseases.

The decision was taken at a joint governing body meeting of both institutions here last week.

The KHF was a multi-crore project launched in 2003, with the Department of Cardiology at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College as the base, to provide tertiary level cardiac care facilities to the people and to promote preventive cardiology activities in the community.

The government had sanctioned Rs.1 crore as corpus fund to the institution and allocated 3.7 acres of land inside the Medical College campus.

However, it had turned out to be yet another initiative which did not take off the way it had been envisaged and had all along been just an appendage of the Department of Cardiology at the MCH. The idea had been to launch the Foundation and to raise the rest of the funds through bank loans, which never really worked out, according to sources.

“Though the Foundation was launched with very lofty aims, soon it was clear that we did not need to have a separate institution to provide sophisticated cardiac care to the community as the Department of Cardiology was already fulfilling that task. We also have the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute on the same campus providing similar facilities,” a senior Health official pointed out.
