Right to education bill

I read that there will be some 25% seats allocated for poor and disabled children in private schools. Does that mean that elite schools like Trivandrum Intn'l school will have to admit poor children and bear their educational expenses? Or is it that Govt. will compensate the private schools for admitting these children? I am just curious..BTW, I prefer the former and hoping for quality education for kids from poor families.

Kerala -The education Hub..!!??

Hello everyone,
Just happened to note this fact/announcements
1. TVM-IISER,IIST
2.Kollam- English & Foreign Language Univ
3.EKM- Maritime univ,world class Univ..??
4.Trissur- Medical univ
5.Palakkad-IIT..??
6.Kasargod-Central univ
7.calicut-IIM,NIT
8.kannur- Fashion institute (IIFT)
9.Malappuram-Aligarh Univ
....etc..etc..
Why are they creating univ everywhere...could nt we have educational hubs, like TVM, EKM, KZKD rather than satisfying local MLAs/MPs..at their districts..
All other states are focussing on specific cities like Bhubaneshwar, Indore,Pune, Chandigarh ,which are fast becoming educational hubs and developing infrastructure accordingly..I believe students prefer ,the place more for its infrastructure and outlook for their career...like saying.."i learned in Bangalore..or Delhi..or Pune..etc..etc.."
its my personal view..could anyone throw light on this special scenario of Kerala..??!!

I agree with you Jaguar.

Resources can be shared effectively in an educational hub, not if the locations are scattered all over .. either TVM or Kochi would have been an ideal location for the proposed CU. IISER came to TVM only because the location was strictly recommended by the scientific advisory board of the PM .. if it was left to the HRD minister, it would have come up at, say, Malappuram or elsewhere in India. Our IISER at TVM is being nurtured by NIIST, RGCB, VSSC, KU, CESS etc.

Well, Jaguar, why is the State trying to pursue a policy of dispersion of the IT/ITES industry by creating infrastructure outside its IT hub, Trivandrum? Every other State has focused on one city till it reached a critical mass of over Rs 10,000 Crores of IT exports before looking at secondary destinations. The same old sad policy is being repeated with educational institutions.

Today, with the exception of the NIT and IIM in Calicut, every major educational and R&D institution of repute is in Trivandrum which is at par with the likes of Pune and Bangalore as a knowledge hub. This is why whenever an institution has come to Kerala of its own volition and not through political pressure, it has gravitated to Trivandrum. The cases of the IISST and IISER are clear examples of merit over political vested interests.

If this divisive policy continues, it will be a case of no one winning and everyone losing.

One of the constructive efforts of our beloved former Transport Minister RB Pillai.

In Tamil Nadu, the undivided Cheran Transport Corporation (CTC) was running an Engineering College at Erode, exclusively for the children of their employees. During those days, Cheran had jurisdiction over Coimbatore, Erode & Nilgiri Districts.

Later on, when Jeeva Transport Corporation (TN-33 N) was formed with Erode as HQ & with area of operation as the Periyour (Erode) District, the College Management was transferred to JTC. Any how, now as the TNSTC is a State wide corporation, all the children of the State's transport employees might be eligible.

May be our collegaues at the TN forum like Arul, Natraj etc might be able to supplement the information.

However, I made this point to stress that the original concept is not that of RB Pillai, rather it was a copy of an idea that did already materialise in a neighboring State.

Anyhow, in Kerala this is the first of its kind and the children of KSRTC employees benefit from this institution. Also, if they wish, KSRTC would be getting some future Engineers from there.

True Ajay, I have been out of TVM for too long .. living in North America and East Asia mostly. Good to know that many such elegant looking educational institutions operate in TVM.

Dude has highlighted many such institutions in the city. I will try to compile all of them in one page for easy reference.

There is another angle to it as well. If you have to attract quality teachers and scientists, the place needs to have good infrastructure such as good schools for children and good quality of life. I don't think someone from a good university in a global setting would come to teach in a place such as Kasargod where our new CU is being planned...no offence meant to Kasargod forumers ..advance bail!!
