Hrvati "pravoslavni Slovenci". Vidiš, totalna glupost... (Hrvati nit' su pravoslavci, nit' su Slovenci).

@viva_bulgaria: one of my grandfathers was from Pirot and I can assure you that 99% of inhabitants of Pirot (not to mention Niš) does NOT identify themselves as Bulgarian, but as Serbian. Of course there are linguistic similarities and a dialect continuum with neighbouring Bulgaria, but there is general disapproval towards Bulgaria in that area. My grandfather was, for example, held war prisoner by Bulgarians in WWII, just like many others from this region were. I'm just saying how people that inhabit these areas feel and identify themselves, although I was well aware from my younger years that the dialect my granddad spoke was in fact a mixture between Serbian and Bulgarian. When I tried to search through my family tree, I found out that his family was in this region for more than 120 years and that their surname ended in -IĆ (like more than 90% of surnames in the area) and this is not a Bulgarian surname suffix as you know. It's completely different in Dimitrovgrad and Bosilegrad, where most people actually have Bulgarian surnames and identify as Bulgarian. Not in Pirot and Niš, I'm afraid.

Sorry for off topic... carry on Deki!

seafood risotto

the old town of Budva is a nice place but something in the air makes photographers forget to change the ISO from 1600 to something more appropriate for shooting into the sun...

Cathedral of St. Triphon

Cathedral of St. Triphon is the best-known landmark of Kotor. It was consecrated in 1166, five and a half centuries before London's St. Paul's, three centuries before the discovery of America and 254 years before Venetians settled in Kotor. Montenegro is justly proud of it.
During excavations in 1987 the existence of an earlier church from the 9th century was confirmed; of the same vintage as the first guild of Boka seamen (Bokeska mornarica), a mutual benefits union which still retains its ancient traditions, its songs and its own version of the wonderful kolo wheel dance. In the first week of February, they have a ceremony marking the martyrdom of St. Triphon.

Relax, take it easy

That's all we'd like to do at times...Perast was one of the first names that crossed my mind when I thought of a place to relax, seat idly, clear your head. Even if my memory is limited to one sunny afternoon there, I wouldn't mind being taken there this very moment- a walk trough eternity- as one slogan advertises the town...not such a bad choice of words, not bad at all...

down to Skadar lake

quality of a photo is suspicious as I took it from inside the mini-van that me and a friend hitched to get us from Tivat to Podgorica. The road is extremely scenic, something I've never seen before, and two stages are especially beautiful, the one from Budva up to the mountains, and other one presented here on a photo, passing Skadar lake and Rijeka Crnojevica settlement.
I couldn't order man who was driving us for free to start stoping along the way only for me to take photos, so that's why this one is the best what I've got from these Skadar views. But shall go back there soon and do it properly, as the place was so scenic, like from a fairytale!

I don't talk about their self-identification now. Now they identify themselves like Serbs but that dates only from 19th century because travelers such as Ami Boué, Guillaume Lejean and others write that the Bulgarian populated lands begin in Nis. The surname ending with -IĆ is now predominately Serbian but in the past it was widely used in Bulgaria as well, we had families such as Parchevich, Soymirovich in the region of Chiprovtsi for instance. Of course you should know that I don't think that the population should be forced to return to its Bulgarian identity, no, if you now identify like Serbs that is your right and no one must deny it.

To return on topic - Crno Lake.

Jer more je jedna stvar, more cu naci i u Grckoj, Italiji, Turskoj, Francuskoj, itd.

Srbija, RS i CG su raznovrsne zemlje. Cela Evropa na jednom malom mestu: Kulturna i prirodna raznovrsnost.

Well, I wouldn't count 100% on what travellers from 19th century wrote about the place.

Anyway, as I said there is a dialect continuum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialect_continuum , so it's quite difficult to determine where the border between 2 ethnic groups is. Also if you watch Serbian film Zona Zamfirova ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zona_Zamfirova_(film) ), you can see that the language is virtually incomprehensible for modern Serbian speakers and is quite close to Bulgarian, but you have to take into account that standard Serbian is based on western dialects of Serbian and that standard Bulgarian is based on eastern dialects of Bulgaria, so there is a whole palette of dialects which connect the two languages in between. After all, both languages are Slavic and close to each other. In Croatia, speakers of kajkavian dialect are closer to standard Slovenian than to standard Croatian by far, yet they do not consider themselves Slovenian, nor do Slovenians claim they are Slovenian...
