Amritsar airport a 'boon' for passengers

http://www.ibnlive.com/news/amritsar...s/62137-3.html

Amritsar (Punjab): The Raja Sansi International Airport in Amritsar has seen unprecedented growth touching 54 per cent two years back.

It is also the only airport in the country where international passengers outnumber domestic ones in the ratio five to one.

The road to Raja Sansi International Airport maybe chaotic, yet the ride is bearable for the widely dispersed Punjabi diaspora---pilgrims to the Golden Temple from India and abroad, as well as those wanting to travel abroad for work.

“This is the only airport that has more international passengers than national,” says Director, Amritsar Airport, Arun Talwar.

From just a few thousand passengers a decade back, the Amritsar airport now handles more than half a million visitors annually.

The runway was extended this year to allow jumbo jets and Airbus 380s to land.

The terminal building, completed in 2006, is already falling short hence massive infrastructure development works have been planned.

For frequent flyers in Punjab, the airport is a boon because earlier, the closest airport was in far off Delhi.

"The international airport has come closer to us so a flight to Sharjah is very convenient,” says a passenger, Harpal Singh.

But all is not hunky dory. Traffic jams on the busy and narrow road to the airport are common.

Besides there are no telephone booths in the terminal building, water runs out in taps and there is no air conditioning yet.

However the airport on the extreme west of Punjab has made life easier for the millions who make their way to work in the Gulf, Europe and the Americas as well as for Sikhs from around the world wanting to visit their holiest shrine.

From 22,000 passengers a decade back to more than half a million passengers now, the Amritsar International airport is a miracle for the locals who have seen it grow.

Tata, Reliance Energy among bidders for airport development

Mumbai: Several Indian firms, including some large conglomerates, and foreign companies are in the running to develop the international airport at Amritsar in Punjab which one aviation analyst calls “a valuable airport” because of its location and the number of airlines flying to it, a function of the huge non-resident Indian (NRI) population that has roots in that part of the country.

Among the initial bidders for the project are the Tata group, Reliance Energy Ltd, Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T), Zurich Airport, Vienna Airport, Gammon Infrastructure, Emaar MGF Ltd, K Raheja group, DS Constructions Ltd, Maytas Infra Ltd, Nagarjuna Construction Ltd, General Electric, DLF Ltd, Unitech Ltd, the GMR group and the GVK group.

Bilga Air

A new airline will launch flights between Birmingham Airport and the northern Indian city of Amritsar this autumn.

Bilga Air is set to take to the skies on October 9, filling the void created by Air India's withdrawal of an identical service.

Twice weekly flights to India will depart on Monday and Sunday evening, with 90 per cent of services operating on a non-stop basis.

The aircraft cabin will be made up of a mixed configuration of economy and premium economy seats. Return fares start from £575 return, including taxes.

Birmingham Airport spokesman Peter Vella commented: "Bilga Air's operation will help to fill a very popular market which exists in the Midlands.

"Following the disappointing news that Air India will temporarily suspend its flights between Birmingham and India from the end of October, I'm sure it will be greatly welcomed by the Midlands Asian community."

Bilga Air takes its name from a historical village, located close to Amritsar, which is revered in the Sikh faith.

Haryana supports naming Chandigarh airport after Bhagat Singh

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda Saturday said that Haryana fully support the naming of the international airport of Chandigarh as Shahid Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh.

The Chief Minister was addressing the media persons after inaugurating the Advance Hernia Surgery Centre and Advance Piles Surgery Centre of Diwan Hospital at Ludhiana.

Hooda said that it was a matter of pride that when today we were celebrating the 66 anniversary of Quit India movement, the International Airport of Chandigarh and two states of Haryana and Punjab was named after great martyr Bhagat Singh. He said that belonging to a family of freedom fighters, he was personally feeling happy on this development. He said that he had never raised objections or opposed the naming of International Airport of Chandigarh as Shahid Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh.

ATQ - AMRITSAR AIRPORT

Amritsar Airport review by Mikele Singh

11 April 2008 Customer Rating :

Airport security is incredibly lax and inconsistent. You initially undergo a brief bodysearch when arriving at the airport. My dad and our driver were both searched but my sister and I were not subject to this search. Maybe they can tell that your not dangerous just by looking at you? Our baggage was not checked when entering the airport. Due to cancellations we had to have our baggage security checked twice. This means you put your own suitcase into a big machine for x-ray while a security official watches a screen as it passes through. This is the baggage you check-in. The first time all bags were aloud through unchecked. The second time, one of the bags was flagged as containing a suspicious item. Why was this not flagged the first time? The security staff then wrap security tape around your suitcase to indicate that it has been checked. You then proceed to check- in on your own. This would allow enough time for you to insert dangerous items into your baggage. As far as i'm aware there are no more checks on your checked in baggage. The procedure is flawed. Then comes the second stage of security as you enter the departure lounge where your hand baggage is checked and you as a person. My sister got through with a nail file in her bag. In my opinion, as long as you look like you're not a threat to the safety of the hundreds of passengers you're about to fly with, you'll get through with anything. The security procedures here need to be over-hauled.

Amritsar Airport review by Tony Banwait

2 March 2008 Customer Rating :

February 2008 - This airport is currently undergoing some major renovation so there's construction mess everywhere. Upon arrival, got through immigration fairly quickly and suitcases arrived within 30 minutes. Leaving the terminal building confronted by scores of beggars which I found to be absolutely shameful for the airport authority to allow this. Had to navigate through various mounds of sand to get to our taxi. Departure day had to navigate through the same mountain of construction only to be greeed by throngs of airport security personnel who really don't know what they're looking at when they ask for passport and ticket. Showed wrong e-ticket print out but was still allowed to enter ! No problems through immigration and security. Prior to boarding need to show passport and boarding pass to security official, Jet Airways official and Indian government offical in a span of five feet.
