A fun autumn concert in the Botanical Gardens next to the Emmerentia Lake. Freshly Ground performed, my favorite band (South African, that is).

A couple of 80F rumours are out there, but I think with the current global situation this remains a dream.

Rosebank, also thanks to Luf. Similar to Sandton, but on a smaller scale. Rosebank lies between the CBD and Sandton. Very upmarket, very cosmopolitan - this is where you find people from all creeds and colours. Look at the density of the urban forest, and spot the Purple Jacaranda trees inbetween!

I would definitely contest that Sandton is the main financial center of johannesburg. All the major banks head offices, ie, FNB, ABSA, Standard Bank still base their head offices in the city. Absa and FNB are currently extending their city offices. Also, Billiton, Chamber of Mines and Anglo are all based in the CBD. Anglo has also recently extended into the old turbine hall with a whole new office for Anglo Gold Ashanti. Insurance companies Mutual and Federal, Hollard and Zurich are also STILL in the city! Johannesburg has roughly DOUBLE the A grade office space available in Sandton. Yes sandton my be cleaner and newer, but seriously, the Sandton CBD could fit onto Main Street in the city and there would still be spcae left over.

Where are the "modern highrises" of the booming Dallas and Houston? If you check on Emporis you'll note all the major projects in those cities date back from 70's and 80's. So, get over!

Google 'Dallas Arts District.'

Anyway, JoBurg looks like a combo of numerous different cities from around the world. Nice thread.

There are some amazing things happening in Johannesburg. However, our local government remains pretty useless, and as such many of the revitalization programs fall behind schedule (or into disrepair). Politically, socially and economically this city can be a bitch. But you can't help falling in love with her. I have been gone for just over 3 months now, and I can't wait to return!

This was one of the city's first "skyscrapers." The Barbican was empty for decades, and severely neglected. Luckily it has been saved from demolition!
