I don't think any of us would mind if you use our pics! Feel free to do so. Btw, I moved into my new office in Melville (Johannesburg) - so expect more pics of this trendy little suburb once I get my bearings!

Cool thread! Is there a sense of optimism among people in SA that things are generally on the right track, or do people feel that some sort of collapse could happen?

Among the uninformed - there is always pessimism. The informed tend to be the positive ones.

South Africa has never been a perfect country - and it will never be. But I agree with Lydon - many people's pessimism is rooted in their lack of knowledge concerning the history of the country and also concerning current policies. A lot of people read only one newspaper, and this means they only enjoy a particular viewpoint on certain matters. That said - I am cautiously optimistic at this stage... the future will be challenging, as the past have been. But collapse? Bit melodramatic, if you ask me.

Some more Johannesburg pictures courtesy of Flickr.

The contrasts in this city is mindblowing at times... This is Alexandria, the largest township in the northern suburbs (Soweto is in the South).

And this is the northern suburbs of Houghton, Sandton, Rosebank, Dunkeld, Hyde Park, Killarney... As seen from the city centre looking north... Alexandria is to the west of these neighbourhoods. And its neighbour

A scale model of my apartment building in Killarney. The building has many amazing art deco features and was built in the 1930's.

I have been on many rollercoasters all over the world. But the anaconda is immense fun, and still one of my favorites

Was in Johannesburg City Centre yesterday, and construction is happening all over the place. There is a difference though. Many CBD's see a boom with 30 - 60floor skyscrapers. In Johannesburg that is not the case. The majority of the 15 - 30 floor buildings are going up in the decentralized node of Sandton (the new financial hub). In Johannesburg CBD you see a couple of 10floor projects - including a bank constructing 3 10floor buildings, another bank constructing a 11floor parkade and office, and a 9floor building for an insurance company. The rest of the construction is all renovations - buildings that are basically being gutted and refitted. A lot of abandoned office blocks being turned into apartments, and a lot of old buildings being repurposed.

They are also busy constructing a BRT system, so the roads are chaotic with the bus lanes under construction. Drove past three sites where they where filming - a movie in anderson street, an add in main street and a reality TV show in the old Carlton Hotel Ballroom.

So the city is looking up - but unfortunately we cannot expect any serious new highrises for the time being.

According to Neil Fraser, there are plans to reopen both the sun and Carlton hotels. I guess the new owners will take advantage of the major facelift of Retail Improvement District, to start this year, and the BRT, under construction, which are both closerby.
