Just post more photo's of Joey's - sure its 5 times the size of Auckland and about twice the population of NZ, so it has more colour, more edge, and just way more excitement - but she is prettying herself up, and 2010 is going to be her crowning glory.

We will definately do that Digger, the sad thing is that we used to have high crime rates around the city and so the security guys don't easily let us take photos. It' sad because crime have decreased tremendously.

What happened to Johan before this kind of "get over"? Now it seems much better! Thanks for the pics, Jake!

Would appreciate a moderator to delete all of the comments posted in the wake of kiwi and his hijacking of this thread. He came in to deliberately stir emotions, his comments were offensive, he was clearly looking for trouble. It is sad that this kind of behaviour is tolerated.

"Johannesburg is a strange city. And yes, it is intimidating. I guess that is what I enjoy... Johannesburg is complex, frequently misunderstood, often overlooked. It pulses with energy, but there is also the seething undertone of tension, even anger (you find this in third world cities across the world)."

The same could be said about Philadelphia but what makes the two cities so different is that Philadelphia has focused on cleaning up its entire core and establishing the Center City District. Center City is an organized oasis of wealth and prosperity surrounded by some pockets of middle class and lower class. Johannesburg seems to have pockets of stability but they are not linked to become one whole like that of Center City Philadelphia.

I have to agree with you in this regard as we now see the fleshy Sandton and Rosebank coming up and atrracting much of the investment while the core CBD is moslty an average individual. Even though the municipality's approach is working to attract investment in the core CBD, I still say that more have to be added to the currently existing approach.

Johannesburg looks like it has so much potential!
How is Cape Town compared to Joburg? better off?

Cape Town is definitely better off, but Joburg is getting there

Just ignore these kind of people, insecurity, jealousy and envy can do terrible things to people.

Cape Town has a denser, smaller core. Johannesburg CBD has more office space than Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria put together (in fact, twice as much, even if you add all the others!). Johannesburg is were the money is. All the major companies (international and national). Salaries are higher. If Joburg compares well with New York, Cape Town would be San Fran or Boston.

I didn't say it doesn't. I think we'd be fooling ourselves if we were to say that Cape Town's CBD isn't better kept than Joburg's is, though. Obviously it's natural that Joburg being so much larger will need more time and work to keep up-to-scratch, but that wasn't what the poster wanted to know I look forward to a completely clean, safe and beautiful Joburg CBD.

Cape Town's setting makes it more attractive than Johnannesburg. A good analogy would be...

Johannesburg/Sao Paulo
Cape Town/Rio De Janeiro
Durban/Recife
Pretoria/Brasilia
That's my two cents.

In the US
Johannesburg/Atlanta
Cape Town/Honolulu or San Francisco but the mountain backdrop in Hawaii is quite stunning.
Durban/Long Beach
Pretoria, can't really equate but maybe Salt Lake City perhaps.

Some more pictures of Braamfontein, an office node that developed next to the traditional CBD. This area also took a bit of a dive during the 1980's and 1990's (it is situated next to Hillbrow). However, today office vacancies are low, so low in fact that new offices will need to be developed. The High-Speed Railway station (Gautrain) will also be situated in this area, bringing ever more feet to the traditional CBD and Braamfontein.

Braamfontein has a lot of street art. This is one of the many metal trees that were installed throughout the district.

The Fish Bowl. A horrid 1960's box, transformed into loft apartments with spectacular views of the CBD. Bridge precinct

Nelson Mandela Bridge - linking Braamfontein to the CBD.
