San Francisco

This past weekend I flew to San Francisco to visit a friend in law school at Berkeley. It was my first trip to the Bay area and I must say I had a fantastic 5 days there! I timed my trip to coincide with the Castro Street Fair, but unfortunately I left the battery to my camera at his apartment in the East Bay that day (proprietary battery that isn't sold charged - couldn't buy a new one in San Francisco). So unfortunately no pictures from that event. But I do have photos from the Love Parade on Saturday - something I didn't even realize was happening that weekend until I arrived. Other than clouds & rain (late) on the day I arrived, I had picture perfect weather. I did some of the touristy stuff (Sausalito, Coit Tower, Lombard Street, etc), but I also tried to visit some neighborhoods that probably don't see quite as much tourist foot traffic, such as West Portal, Cole Valley, Inner Sunset, Noe Valley, & Hayes Valley. I love Chicago, but if there was some way for me to be able to split my time between here and San Francisco, I'd do it. Anyway, here are my photos of The City (and Sausalito too!).

The above photo is the last photo I was able to take before my battery died on Tuesday, a few hours before I had to fly back to Chicago. It's unfortunate because I stumbled upon an incredible view not more than 10 minutes later at the intersection of Liberty & Rayburn. If anyone out there has some free time, please go there & snap some photos. The views of the west hills are amazing!

(btw, some of the photos are grainy because I'm still trying to learn how to use my new camera and at times I inadvertently switched the camera to a lower quality setting)

you did a fine job, great photo tour.

Aaron, in some of those photos you have portrayed San Francisco to look like Los Angeles. Nice job. Where else have you been in the States? I think Oakland, Berkeley, LA and Santa Cruz have more hippies. Dolores Park has great views. What did you like about San Francisco? the people, the weather, the vibe? What I like about San Francisco is that it is in California but it has a rich history for such a new part of the US. There is a sense of tradition and establishment there. There are a lot of wooden homes in SF. Now if they could do something about those damn wires and the Pacific Ocean temperatures. Those surfers are nuts. That water is bone chilling and the natural habitat for the great white shark.

I like how you captured the greenery there. I can't wait to go back to Chicago. Chicago is so beautiful. That is where I would like to live one day but will probably end up back in NYC.

Fantastic tour of the city! That has to be one of the most thorough and best photo posts of San Francisco ever. You really captured the essense of the city. Thank you for the photos of Castro. It's always ironic that the neighbourhood Italian restaurant there is called the "Sausage Factory"

I admire San Fran and have been there countless times. I couldn't come to terms with living there as the cost of living is way too dear and it does have a very dirty side to it. For that I feel like LA was a beter choice. However, it's natural beauty is unmatched and it truly is a magical place

I think the area that probably most resembled neighborhoods that could be found in the Los Angeles area was probably the West Portal neighborhood. I almost skipped going there because I was tight on time, but I'm glad I squeezed it in. It's a very nice neighborhood with good MUNI subway access.

Before this trip, I'd only ever been to LA & Seattle on the west coast. Most of the places I've been to have been in the Midwest & Eastern US (Chicago, Des Moines, Detroit, Indy, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Reading, Philadelphia, DC, New York, Nashville, Norfolk, Orlando, Austin, San Antonio, Houston).

I think it's probably easier for me to say what I didn't like about San Fran because there is just too much to list that I liked. The two biggest issues I had was that it seemed as though there was a lot more litter around than here in Chicago. And not surprisingly, there seemed to be an immense amount of homeless people. But other than that, I don't think there's much else I can complain about.

Yes, Chicago is beautiful. Unfortunately it's only very green for 6 months of the year, May - October. The other 6 months the trees aren't green. But that's not to say I don't love Chicago.

Haha, I hadn't even thought about that connection. My friend & I almost ate there on my last evening before flying back to Chicago. We ended up going to Cafe Flore instead. It was 2 for 1 margaritas night for just $5.
