My Lisbon

Last week I was persuaded to spend a long weekend in Lisbon (which really didn't take that much persuasion). I'd never been there before so to me it was a first. Here's my impression of it.

01.

02. You just have to love these little tram cars. I understood that they're under treath these days, which really would be a shame if they had to go.

03. Dutch painter Joop Polder likes these so much that Lisbon tram cars is all he paints. Can't blame the guy.

04. Girlie going her own way.

05. Guess who owns a skyscraper web forum...

06. Coming from up north of the planet, images like these just make you day dream all day long. Can I see myself sitting there for the rest of my life you ask? Yep!

07. Fisherman along the shore close to Praça do Comércio.

08. Here's another typical feat, the tiled facades. I was told they do that because tiling is relatively cheap and it seems to keep the heat out, but to me the main reason to do it because it just looks nice.

09. From inside one of these trams

10. Wish you hadn't eaten so much as of late don't you...

11. From up the Alfama.

12.

13. Typical view from anywhere up the hills. Quite lovely area to stroll through, really.

14. One of the angled cars going up steep streets. This one started next to out hotel on Av. Libertate.

15. Areas like these would be unthinkable where I am from, but that's also why I like them.

16. It is real nice to spend all day strolling around in 26 degrees just wondering where you'll be having lunch or dinner next.

17. Next to the trams and the tilings, the little balconies are very typical. I wonder what a skyscraper would look like with these.

18. One cab driver told me he never had left the country and almost never leaves Lisbon. He didn't expect to. Scenes like these is probably why, which even without having experiences proper comparison material still seems appreciative.

19. Yeah, you bet I'll be back one day!

Haha, great commentary, you really 'brought me there'. Lisbon is a character-filled beauty.

@Jan

Nice photos but have you just been in the old town (Baixa) to see just photos from there?
Or did you have also time to visit other parts of the town, more modern parts, Oriente and so far...?

Lisbon is soooo nice and sooo warm. Gentle people the portuguese, too.

A bit romantic and melancholic ambient.

I can see where San Francisco gets some of its influence from. Lisbon alleys are narrower than Barcelonas. Gorgeous city on my must see list.

San Francisco and Lisbon are very similar, they are both on the ocean, they have similar climate (Mediterranean), they are both hilly, both 7 hills both to be exact, and both San Francisco and Lisbon have a Golden Gate Bridge..

We looked at mountains until dawn, and then when dawn came, it was too pretty for me - there was pink and blue and gold, in the sky, and on icy places, brilliant pink and gold flashes, and the snow was colored too, and I said," Oh," and sighed; and each moment was more beautiful than the one before; and I said, " I love you, Momma." Then I fell asleep in her arms.
That was happiness then.

Great photos, I really enjoyed them. I also thought Lisbon was one of the most beautiful cities I have visited.

Agree about the trams as well. I tended to call them "Tiptoe trams" for the way they seem to lift themselves up over the tracks. I hope they never go as Lisbon and the world would be poorer without them. Afterall, how many other places in the world do you find tram tracks like this:

They run so close to the buildings and trees and one of the few tram networks in the world to work on such hilly gradients.
