such a great arena, when was this built???

has the layout of a mini NFL stadium, with a lower bowl, a second tier (that gets bigger on the sides) with what appears to be the club seats, then the boxes, and finally the upper tier.

also a huge capacity, must be in the US top 10 largest arenas.

Built in 1997, and was one of the first new "downtown" arenas that started to pop up in the 90's.

But really, this is more of a middle sized arena for the NHL and NBA (Just over 18,000 for hockey). Most modern arenas are right at about 18,000 seating capacity with the bigger ones being in the 19,000-20,000 range. But still, very very nice arena

Just looking at that list, hes mixing up which capacity he's using. He has Verizon center listed as having a capacity of 20,173, and Joe Louis Arena in Detroit having a capacity of 20,066. (thus ranking Verizon Center higher than the Joe)

The only problem is; 20,173 is Verizon Center's basketball capacity, and 20,066 is Joe Louis Arena's hockey capacity. If you compare the Joe's 20,066 hockey capacity to Verizon Center's hockey capacity: 18,277, Joe Louis Arena is actually much bigger. All that being said, I'm not trying to promote the Joe over Verizon Center since I think the redwings are a soulless money pit, and I'd much rather watch a Caps game. I'm just pointing out that indeed the Joe holds more people than Verizon.

Go Caps!

Wow do I have memories from this place. I cant even count how many Caps games (and a few wizards and Hoya's games too) I have seen here. The Verizon center is not only one of the most beauitful and elegant arenas in North America, but it really got the whole "downtown" arena trend started, and in the process revitalized a once run down area of DC.

Rangers games were more fun at the Capital Centre than the MCI center.

I dont like the Flat top of the roof. It just feels like its closed in, not very open.

I like it better when it has hockey moreso than basketball. Just looks better. But the best part about the Verizon center is that is in the middle of Chinatown and all over stores around the area.

DC has strict height limits on buildings, so unless they had built it 3 stories underground (Which couldn't happen since they built it over the metro station), so really there was no way it could have a bubble roof anyways.

Im not saying it should have been a higher roof, if just not a fan of these low roofs. Its all a matter of opinion.
