Man, I'm waiting for the day when I can take the Expo line to TAO/EDC/Nocturnal/Monster Massive. Screw looking for parking and paying $20. I wanna get smashed for once and enjoy myself on the trains.

There are a few problems with that comparison. Firstly Times Square is one of the most touristed places on Earth. Whoever said that Downtown LA was LA's primary tourist trap? It would have been more of a fair comparison to see Hollywood Blvd or Santa Monica Promenade/Venice Beach at night by comparison. Also the LA cam goes ALL OVER Downtown LA. Why does the NYC cam only stay what looks like Broadway and the immediate area surrounding Times Square in Midtown? And lastly Times Square is not DOWNTOWN, it's in MIDTOWN. A cam roaming about in Downtown NYC primarily around the Financial District may look similar to Downtown LA at night.....Financial Districts are notoriously empty at night. So basically the videos compared DOWNTOWN LA to MIDTOWN (Times Square) at night. Why not compare Disney Land to Red Hook (at night), probably would have been a fairer comparison?

Well, in NY Time Square is not the only place with heavy pedestrian traffic. It's just the most dense. The LA vid was in 2009 and I think LA has improved with pedestrian traffic from that time.
Time Square is just one big outdoor mall.
I mean DTLA has a lot of places to explore, but it doesn't look attractive hence it is not that tourist friendly.
I would like to see a bunch of street level up scale shops in DTLA. It would become more lively that is for sure.
When I go to places like Taipei, HK, and Shanghai, there are tons of places and shops to explore around a massive area of street corners. There are a huge grid of places. NY is the same.
LA doesn't have places like that. We are subject to a small strips and a mall/center like with Hollywood blvd and Kodak Theater.
I guess Santa Monica has more exportability.
I want LA to have an urban feeling like those other places, but it is a long way off.
I mean, if bring back Broadway happens, and we add the street car, the park and grand ave. LA can't be beat cuz there will be so much to do.

Where in LA do you live? LA has lots of areas with a heavy urban (read: walkabilty) areas.

I was only commenting on citing Times Square's heavy pedestrian traffic with a place in Los Angeles that doesn't have heavy pedestrian traffic such as Downtown LA. Also the NYC vid stays within the immediate area of Times Square and Broadway and never ventures out. If you would hit up let's say 12th Ave or Wall St it may look alot like Downtown LA at night. Having lived in NYC for a # of years and now residing in LA perhaps Los Angeles doesn't have the sustained pedestrian activity of a city like NYC but why compare NYC's most trafficked area with one of LA's least?

Soup, I used to live in Hawthorne. I now stay at Cal Poly.
klam, well I guess I am bitter that LA is not as walkable as these other cities.
I have friends from Korea, Taiwan, China, and Japan and I always have to hear about how much our transportation sucks or how disappointing our downtown is compared to their central areas.

But our entertainment area is not downtown it seems to be Hollywood right now so why these people are going downtown is a mystery to me. It's interesting that these same people will go to cities with much less a robust mass transit system like Austin or ride buses in Seattle all day and not complain at all. I won't get into what is walkability to some people as opposed to others. It seems for some in order for a place to be considered walkable you need lighted streets. I'd say that after living in Harlem and outer Brooklyn there were many rundown streets that I had to walk down that were not appropriately lit but still walkable. Some people seem to also need to see others that look like them walking or are in the same assummed economic class. There are just too many variables and prejudices as to what is walkable and what makes a good public transit system which I think LA has a decent system comparable to US cities and getting better. From Cal Poly you could take Metrolink in transfer to the Red Line and go party all night in Hollywood taking the first Red Line train back out at 5 in the morning and Metrolink back to Cal Poly. Tons of parties in Hllywd go on til 4 and even later. But if you already think that the pt system sucks then you wouldn't take advantage of it.

Take the last 10pm train out of Pomona transfer to the Red Line and party in Hollywood. The first Metrolink out of US is at 9am which will give you enough time to have breakfast and get back on the train. That was for Sat-Sun partying although it looks like Fri-Sat partying is even better because there is a 6:15 am train heading back to Pomona so you wouldn't even have to eat breakfast in LA to kill time. It's interesting because this is done by people in other cities but seen as strange here. People would do this all the time who took the train in from Long Island, party until the trains began running again in the morning returning back to Islip or Montauk or wherever they came from. This isn't rocket science people.
