New Madinah Airport

Recent design developments

March 2013

GMW Architects International, working with URS and a number of Turkish engineering consultants, has developed the master plan for the Medina Airport’s expansion over three phases.

Phase 1 is currently under construction and will see the airport developed to meet initial growth to 8 million pax, expected by 2023.

The latest images of Medina Airport just have been released. These show the most recent design developments.

On site, the contractor is progressing well with leveling the ground for the whole development and has began casting the floor slabs for the terminal building.

Prophet's Mosque expansion project

by Dynamic Energy - 1 May 2013

A joint venture between Lebanon’s Khatib&Alami and Turkey’s Istanbul Ulasim won the consultancy services contract for a new metro in Madinah. The client for the project is the local Madinah Development Authority.

The full scope of works includes preparing a feasibility study, the architectural design, the static and electro-mechanical works, as well, as preparing the tender documents for the construction and consultancy for the first metro line.

The metro will link the airport to the Prophet’s mosque. Early estimates suggest the project will cost at least $1bn to construct.

Tatweer gains recognition for Madinah airport work

Cumhur Kaur (left) hands the certificate to
Tatweer general manager Muhammad Malik Raslan
Jul 22, 2013

Concrete company Tatweer has gained recognition from the joint venture team building the new $1bn Madinah Airport for delivering more than 90,000 cubic metres of defect-free concrete to the project.

The Madinah-based company's general manager, Muhammad Malik Raslan, was handed a roject achievement certificate from project director Cumhur Kaur on behalf of joint venture partners TAV Construction and Arabian Contracing Co.

The joint venture's quality control team tested every truck that was delivered to site and turned away any truck that did not meet requirements. It took more than 1,200 measurements from concrete sumps and crushed over 2,500 concrete cylinders to test supplies.

It found that the on-site batching plant was delivering 35MPa concrete with an average strength of 41.8MPa. In total, Tatweer delivered 91,170 cubic metres of defect-free concrete over a continuous period of 12 months.

The joint venture partners said the award was "testimony to the success of the TAV-ACC JV subcontractor and supplier management strategy" of getting quality products safely produced and delivered both on time and to budget.
