Thanks for sharing these photos sky-eye, very nice. Most people put Bruges as their favourite Belgian city but for me it has to be Ghent. Ghent seems to be a more living city whereas Bruges seems to exist these days just for the tourists.

Fantastic pics!

I think that Belgium is one of the most under-rated countries and most looked over countries in the EU. It has so much to offer, but so many people haven't considered it as a tourist destination.

I've been to Belgium once (back in 1991). We stayed in Bruges (an insanely beautiful city), along with Ostend (great traditional "seaside" town). Actually, Ostend was more than a town -- I recall it had its own tram system and a really nice beach.

The Belgians I met were very friendly, although a couple of them corrected me when I tried to use French in a Dutch speaking part of Belgium.

I would really recommend Belgium to anyone though...great country.

Very glad you didn't leave off the ugly shots - it made the photo thread seem more real. Excellent shots and thank you for sharing!

Ostend doesn't really have it's own tram system, but the "kusttram" (coastal tram) the longest tramline in the world, passes through all belgian coastal towns, including Ostend of course.

A lovely mid-sized city it seems.

One of my favourite Belgian cities. The 'Central' Station is undergoing a drastic renovated at this moment. As a matter of fact it's going to be renewed almost completely.
Thanks for sharing your nice pics!

It seems that the National Geographic Traveler agrees;

Indeed:

National Geographic Travel:

Ghent word Wide the third most authentic city

Quote:
Historic Places Rated:

Belgium: Historic Center of Ghent

Score: 81

"An interesting range of cultural experiences: churches, medieval castle museums, and rich painting collections, well-preserved and -presented."

"A gloriously eclectic city, with an excellent mix of old and new buildings. Needs to work on interpretation and signing to explain and thus help conserve its treasures. Much improved fabric."

"Unlike its neighbor Bruges, Ghent has retained the character of a functioning city rather than an open-air museum."

"Aesthetic appeal is high particularly because the city has not turned into a mono-economy of tourism."
