Money in the ‘billions’ from centre: Manyin
By Ting Tieng Hee
Fri, July 3, 2009

ALMOST COMPLETED: Raziah speaks to Manyin (right) as they walk along
the lobby area followed closely by (from left) McCartney, Ose and Sng.

KUCHING: Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), which is to commence operation later this year, will be a boon for tourism in Sarawak particularly in the meetings, incentive, conference and exhibition (MICE) sector.

Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin Jawong expects the centre to generate money in the ‘billions’ in the long term, even though the initial capital for the project is very high.

He said he based his positive outlook on the centre’s ability to stage MICE events capable of bringing in high-end tourist expenditure.

“MICE is one of the things in the world today that many countries are going after because it brings in big money.

“Our revenue from tourism will be very big because MICE brings in top executives of big companies in the world,” he told reporters after making a site inspection of the BCCK project yesterday.

Manyin said last year alone, tourism contributed RM4.3 billion to the state’s revenue, which was only second to manufacturing.

He added: “In Sarawak, we believe that if we do it (tourism) well and aggressively, we can make tourism one of our biggest revenue earners.”

On yesterday’s site visit, Manyin said it was to ensure that works were progressing smoothly and that the project would be completed by end of the month for the soft opening on October 18.

Located at the Isthmus near Pending here, the RM200 million project undertaken by PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd is now 95 per cent completed.

Among those who accompanied Manyin on the site visit were BCCK chairperson Datuk Raziah Mahmud, deputy chairman Larry Sng, executive director Mohamadon Abdullah, chief executive Trevor McCartney, permanent secretary to Ministry of Urban Development and Tourism Datu Ose Murang and a project director with Public Works Department Stanley Chai.

Meanwhile, McCartney said in a press statement that by July 17, all BCCK’s 61 staff would have moved into the new convention centre.

“The migration of staff from our pre-opening office at Queens Court will be done in stages, with the first batch moving to site next Wednesday and the final batch on July 17,” he said.

Despite the move, enquiries and requests will continue to be entertained by the management team at toll free number 1-800-99-BCCK (2225).

He said confirmed events for BCCK in coming months included ‘2009 Executive Masterclas’ from Aug 9 to 15 and ‘Da Ai Charity Concert on Sept 19.

A wholesome Ramadan buffet would also be held from Aug 22 to Sept 19, with the vouchers for the buffet on sale now.

Featuring state-of-the-art facilities with a rain forest as backdrop, BCCK is the first purpose-built convention centre in Borneo designed to give visitors a memorable experience with world class facilities and five-star services.

It will also feature a shopping centre, marina, offices and an international hotel to fulfill the visitors’ every need and desire.

BCCK is just 5km from Kuching City centre and close to Kuching International Airport.

Major tourist attractions are all within a short driving distance and commercial areas are also within close proximity.

BCCK has a unique multi-dimensional design that is able to accommodate large scale conventions, conferences, exhibitions and multi-purpose events combining entertainment, exhibitions and performances all on the one level.

It is uniquely designed with all the meeting facilities on one level.

On this level, there are accommodations that can cater to any event of between five and 5,000 people.

The Great Hall covering 2,793 sq metres is complemented by 14 additional meeting rooms, extensive registration and foyer space and world class catering services.

The centre is managed by a team of well trained professionals with international experience dedicated to giving visitors their most memorable convention experience.

Sarawak Aims To Tap MICE Sector When BCKK Opens
July 02, 2009 19:22 PM

KUCHING, July 2 (Bernama) -- Sarawak aims to tap the lucrative meetings, incentive, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) sector when the new Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) opens for business by October.

State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin said the RM200 million centre would boost Sarawak as the destination for MICE and help bring in more tourists to the state.

"Now, many countries are competing to promote MICE tourism to attract high-end tourists to get bigger share of revenue in the industry.

"However, I believe Sarawak can do it well when BCCK starts operating. The MICE sector will be the revenue generating industry in the state," he told reporters after inspecting the 95 percent-completed BCCK here Thursday.

Located in Kuching Isthmus, about 5km from the city centre, BCCK is the first purpose-built convention centre in Borneo and can accommodate up to 9,000 people in its four halls and 14 meeting rooms.

Borneo convention centre to woo business delegates
By Lim How Pim
Sunday, July 5th, 2009

KUCHING: The soon-to-be operational Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) will woo business delegates as they tend to spend three times more than the average tourist.

“Their presence here will generate three times more spending than the average tourist and create an industry multiplier effect of 1.6, benefiting hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, airlines, banks and other related industries,” said deputy chairman of BCCK, Larry Sng, who is also Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Economic Planning) when witnessing the official commissioning of BCCK at the convention centre in Sejingkat here yesterday.

“With our world class convention facilities now available, international business delegates will be given greater opportunities to hold meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) in our state.”

Sng, who is also Pelagus assemblyman, said the creation of BCCK was by no means a small achievement. It was well researched through a feasibility study conducted in 2003, which determined the size of the convention centre’s facilities and its market potential, he said.

To date, BCCK has a team of 61 members of staff who are mostly Sarawakians with the exception of a few international MICE industry experts including a world renowned chef working alongside them.

The convention centre, installed with the most advanced lighting, sound and communication equipment, is the perfect place to accommodate large conventions of up to 5,000 delegates.

Sng believed that holding an international convention at BCCK would be an experience of a lifetime.

“BCCK being the first world class convention centre on the island of Borneo, home to one of the world’s oldest tropical rainforests, is something that cannot be replicated elsewhere as yet,” he said.

It would launch its maiden event on Aug 9, he said, adding that preparations were made for its grand opening scheduled for Oct 18.

Earlier, BCCK chief executive Trevor McCartney announced that they had confirmed the prestigious Napoleon Hill International Convention 2010 with over 2,000 delegates from around the world.

“This is precisely the type of event we want to bring to BCCK and the city of Kuching,” he said, adding that the convention centre had sent out 21 proposals for local, regional and international events.

McCartney said BCCK would set new standards in the conference industry regardless of the type of event.

“Be it a summit, conference, exhibition, or grand banquet, our staff will lead, serve and set benchmarks along the way.”

When BCCK is fully operational, it would have over 200 full-time staff and up to 300 part-time staff, he said.

Among those present were BCCK executive director Dr Mohamadon Abdullah and director Datuk Seri Tengku Zainal Adlin Tengku Mahamood.
