Worst Road You've Ever Traveled?

What is the worst road you've ever traveled? It could mean condition of the road, traffic or the way it was designed. For me it would have to be the loop around Paris, Tx. Not only is the surface horrible but parts are freeway and other sections are like a street, so one minute you're going 75 on the freeway and then have to come to an abrupt stop at a stop sign or traffic light. I don't understand why it was never built entirely as a freeway.

What you described we have tons of in Florida, stupid residents of the past opposed freeways so we have many incomplete freeways.

I hate driving the hilly areas in SF. True story one time I was at a stop sign on an incline and there was a motorcycle in front of me carrying a passenger in back. The dude stalled out when attempting to go and nearly rolled back into my car.

Michigan is actually in the middle of the pack when it comes to roads, Ohio just happens to be near the top.

After living in the DFW area for around a year now I would have to say that Texas, at least around here, has the one of the worst road systems ever. Lots of uncontrolled intersections that people don’t know how to maneuver properly. The whole one way access road off and onto freeways is not only a pain but once again no one knows how to use properly. Then you have the conditions of many roads especially in the suburbs are horrible. I can’t believe how many neighborhoods have their main access points on roads that are basically still small country roads that don’t even have painted lines which leaves people to drive all over the road. Then there’s the annoying bumps they use all over the roads that have a nickname I can’t use on these forums. I guess I’m the only one that seems to be annoyed by them which probably comes from growing up in the north where we can’t use them due to issues with snow removal and such. I think I’ll just stop my rant here but i think you get my point.

Of the small number of states that I've driven in, Indiana has the worst road infrastructure. They have 60mph 4 lane highways that abruptly end at a "T" intersection (ex. US-24). They also hang most their traffic lights / signage on wires across the roadway. There were many occasions I could not even see my traffic signal because it was too windy, or the wire holding the traffic light was literally over my car. Here in Wisconsin there is a state law that requires traffic lights to be fixed on poles. Some of the newer freeways in Indiana are looking pretty good though.

I would say Wisconsin is near the top of the "best roads" list because of the detailed codes that all roads in the state must follow, especially when part of a municipality. We are also in the continuing process of connecting most of our major cities together by freeway.

Worst road in recent memory: Eastbound I-94 between Madison and Milwaukee Wisconsin. I drove that last April and was nearly bludgeoned to death by the vibrations from the potholes. 2nd worst: Westbound I-80 west of Cleveland. Hit the biggest potholes of my life there at 70 mph. Blew a tire and nearly careened off the road.

Yeah DFW roads can be a nightmare especially during rush hour.

The worst road for me is Pennsylvania Route 44, from just southeast of Coudersport to just north of Jersey Shore. The road went through absolutely no towns, just mountains, so understandably the road was narrow, bumpy from being exposed to extreme elements found in mountainous areas, and winding and hilly. There was one stretch of the road that was actually gravel; I never would've expected a state route to be gravel, and I was so unprepared for this that when it changed from pavement to gravel, I almost spun out and went flying into a ravine. I fishtailed about 3 times for a simple bend in the road and woke myself up quick during this endless and tiresome drive. I had to go 25 mph on the gravel for miles because I didn't want to kill myself.

Honorable mention goes to I-86 and I-390 in western New York. The right lanes in both directions are so bumpy that I'm forced to use the left lane as the regular, non-passing lane, because I know the constant bumps are ruining the infrastructure of the car. Construction crews have been working on repairing this road for maybe 5 years now and it seems like they'll never get done. The road never seems to get any better, either.

The Eastbound I-94 stretch between Madison and Milwaukee segment is being resurfaced right now. Now it is all smooth asphalt.

For me, the worst road would have to be I-43 here in WI, from Beloit to about Elkhorn. I'm only talking about the regular driving lane(non-passing lane). One thing that's really weird is it's this way on BOTH northbound and southbound sides. I know they are doing work on 43 now, and it's long overdue IMO. I've traveled it for the last 5 yrs making trips to/from Iowa and I can still remember the first time I drove it. I honestly had the shocks/struts checked on my car to make sure they didn't need replaced!

For those who haven't driven it, it seems like every slab of the lane that they put down, they didn't make sure was level with the slab before or after...so at freeway speeds, your wheels hit a pretty substantial "bump" every second or two. It's annoying as all hell. The only way to escape this is to speed up and drive in the passing lane for ~30 mile ride. I really can't wait for them to finish resurfacing that stretch.

I was driving from LA to Vegas a few months ago. The weather was hot in LA and Vegas but there was a thunderstorm in the desert on 15. I almost lost control of the car and nearly spun out.

Was that segment of road concrete?

I believe so...I know it's not asphalt, but I'm not too familiar with road construction materials.
