hkskyline's 2008 ADELAIDE #1 - Arcades and More

The next stop in my Australia series is Adelaide, which did not originally get on my travel plan at first, but I decided to visit for a few days and say hello to our Hong Kong forumer HSBC who lives there. Adelaide is a familar place to Hong Kongers, as it is a key training ground for Cathay Pacific pilots, and was featured in a popular sitcom a few years ago on flight crews.

1. I was originally booked to stay right on Hindmarsh Square, but it proved to be too posh and I ended up at Light Square. It was a huge difference.

2. Looks like crash test dummies.

5. From there, I strolled around the neighboring streets and into the arcades.

6. Arcades seem to be a common feature in Australian cities, and Adelaide's version looked quite pretty on the outside.

9. I really liked the tile arrangement and colours. It gives a rightfully nostalgic feel to times long gone.

13. Tucked around a corner on the second floor, I found these historic relics celebrating Adelaide's history.

17. This historic pretty much tells the story.

18. Back on the ground floor and heading out to Rundle Mall ...

21. There is another arcade nearby, which was undergoing some renovations. But the arcade seems like it had undergone a facelift. It seemed to give a more modern feel even though the tiles looked nostalgic.

25. I didn't have much reading material with me when I arrived in Adelaide. I depended heavily on our fellow forumer HSBC and what the tourism office provided. I'm not sure what is the context behind these pigs but they seem to be popular among photographers.

28. Haven't we all thought of doing this at some point in our lives?

Adelaide feels very laid-back, and with ample time to explore within the city and the surroundings, I felt quite relaxed. If you want to take a look at my full collection, you can visit my website's new Adelaide gallery at :

great shots, but are you going to post anymore of your photos? I clicked on the link at the bottom of your set, and your North Tce shots are fantastic. I hope you put them on here also.

Melbstud, our green is disappearing fast into a brown. This current spring (like Melbourne) has been the driest on record and with 3 consecutive years of almost record low rainfall, many beautiful old trees in the parklands are on the verge of dying.

One good note is that our govt has fast-tracked a project to build a pipeline from one of our sewerage treatment works, to water all of Adelaide's parklands with treated sewerage water. Just wish it could have been done years ago, its a brilliant idea. The water situation in south-eastern Australia is almost at crisis point, caus it feels like it will never ever rain again
