Akash, report talks about Bangalore & Mysore only. Since Mangalore at sea level there may not be much load on earth. Since Bangalore, Mysore are at higher altitude they may be pressurising earth more? Only some deep foundation is needed?

Anyway people have already flatened out many hills in Mangalore and the stress on earth might have come down......

In case of Inland Windors they have dug out deep and removed a lot of soil probably two three times the weight of building....

Well Krishnamoorthy I am still pursuing my masters in Structural engineering and I have taken earthquake engineering as my specialization for thesis I also plan to take up project in this very dynamoc field.

Wat I learnt from initial classes in my dept is that by exposing the land to high pressure(due to buildings) it may alter the pressure distribution of the local plates/layers under the region,also water level is high along the coastal region which will act as a lubricant to the fractured plates.
I will soon open a new thread once I feel I have gained enough knowledge here.

Yes we need to study the wave dynamics(geotechnical subject) propagation and attenuation of waves(due to soil damping)some waves refract/reflect due to varying soil densities.Many technical aspects Involved.I will put them later.



EQ can be divided into 3 parts-

1)Seismology/hazard assessment-prediction(toughest)

2)Soil Dynamics(quite difficult as it varies at every point on earth)

3)Structural Analysis-which uses the peak loads due to base excitation This input is used to design buildings.This field is well defined and pretty easy

First two are the toughest.

Mangalore high high ground water level which may act as a lubricant and also subjecting th land to high pressures may make the ground below plastic locally so if slight waves reach Mangalore there will be something called liquefaction and terribly effect the already pressurized plastic plates.

Yes the soil would be well compacted before digging out,once done the soil elastically rebounds back,intense soil testing is required to certify the length of piles required,if the soil has hard stratum below they might go for end bearing piles but mostly in coastal regions it is the friction piles which is significant.

Imagine an entire building is supported on the piles and when waves reach the site there is a phenomenon called liquefaction of soil where soil behaves like liquid and flows in that case the piles are subjected to high compression and no lateral confinement so they buckle under the heavy loads.

Mangalore has that problem

Salt lake city in Calcutta is highly vulnerable to this phenomena of liquefaction

They flattened a bit of a hill for constructing the Citi centre mall!
Akash and Moorthy thanks for educating us on soil characteristics,liquefaction etc...I know only of tectonic plates!

The location is marked as a solid red circle.

Blueberry hill will be on the backside of this proposed building. On Blueberry hill Skyline buildings are under construction. One more thirteen storeyed structure is visible from NH-17 side but not sure whether it is also a Skyline building.

In the advert it is 40,in the Times of India article it is 38 plus 3 floors basement.Let us wait for the Bhoomi pooja .Then the number of floors would be disclosed. Anyway let us keep assume it is 38. Height is 125 metres..that is important.

It is on the slope of Kadri hills. Behind it is valley and then Blueberry hills.

SKS enclave looks really cool,I hope to see it launch as early as possible,if possible would also like to meet the structural engineers who designed it,curious to know the soil conditions prevalent in Mangalore.
