The thing that gets me about Paris' skyline (excluding la defense) is the lack of church spires or domes compared to London. There are very few of them visable above the general buildings. The ones that are visable are of monumental buildings. Maybe its just the topography.

As you can see in my last post, the "spires and domes" are there (especially gothic ones: since this style has its roots in France ), and don't forget the extreme density&homogeneity of inner Paris (quite unique, even in Europe, and imho, the reason why our historic skyline seems to be..flat ):

Topography, like you said :

NOT "original" (it's unique ): The current building is named: Palais de Chaillot !!!!!

Edit 2: Palais du Trocadéro from inside (5,500 seats)...looks like the Albert Hall......

From Viaduc de Passy (aka Pont de Bir-Hakeim)

I think your images proves my point, apart from the main monumental buildings (pantheon, notre dame, university dome, napoleons tomb/les invalides....excuse my spelling and naming). there are comparatively few that stand out. Most of the pics you posted comprise huge swathes of the city with only about 4 or 5 structures above the skyline. The hmogenous colour could be a reason as well though but compare to this

Maybe its just different styles

It's indeed sad Trocadero got demolished. A unique landmark of historism and expo buildings. Almost as bitter as the gone London Crystal Palace.

And I agree, Paris lacks historical towers, or rather - ensembles of those.
Even Berlin had/has a more distinctive historical tower skyline, despite being a lot younger than Paris.

@cardiff: Yes, I've always loved your Napoleon column !!!!!

But what about the second picture (on post #2728) ??

@erbse: Remember that we still have (despite loads of movies have destroyed it ), the most famous landmark/"distinctive historical tower" (1889), on the planet :

I'm still surprised that so many people like "the Palais du Trocadéro"...
IT was UGLY: U-GLY !!!! and the "new" one (aka Palais de Chaillot) opens the view from the Passy/Chaillot hill !

Tour Eiffel in French colours looks cool. They could use this illumination at least once a week!
