Well for Birmingham. However, its skyline is low. For the future, there may be other cities with great skyline. For example, in Valencia (Spain), projects are very interesting. There is an area where 7 buildings built over 100 meters high, including two of 50 floors (200m), all next to the port and in an area surrounded by water navigable channels. At his side, three skyscrapers will be built, designed by Calatrava, with 310M, 260m and 220m respectively. So, as you see the future in Valencia is more spectacular than in Birmingham.

In any case, if we analyze the current European Skylines, the Barcelona is better than Liverpool or Birmingham, which still have very few tall buildings. Even the skyline of Benidorm is better, though its buildings are ugly (although one is being built 200 meters of spectacular skyscraper). And I quite like the skyline of Naples, with beautiful buildings.

LIVERPOOL

BARCELONA

BIRMINGHAM

BARCELONA

Why is better the skyline of Liverpool or Birmingham than Barcelona?

I put this in the old thread, and now I've seen this one xD
I think Barcelona has a great skyline, without tall buildings but unique and special.

Lets not kid ourselves. Birmingham has an OK! skyline, but thats it (at the moment) ... In years to come not many cities in Europe can compete with what its got in store apart from major capitals and notorious high-rise cities. Liverpool also has a asthetically pleasing skyline and this will also become spectacular but it ISN'T YET. Barcelona is stunning. Id love to live there. Skylines are more then just highrises.

A few better examples of Birmingham skyline though just so it clears my notion up. Plenty of potential.

Yes, the skyline of Birmingham looks well. But there is a problem that isn't what it seems. Ie, while Barcelona has 10 buildings over 100 meters, barely four Birmingham, Liverpool and 3, but it seems that there are many more. Why? Because much out buildings in a city with very little height. 25 floors of a highrise on highlights a lot of 5, but don't do much on a building 15. That is the fundamental difference between Birmingham and Liverpool, for example, and Barcelona. According to Emporis, Birmingham has 175 highrises (buildings over 12 floors), Liverpool 52 and 437 Barcelona. Could you imagine how would be the skyline of Liverpool, surrounded by buildings of 12 to 16 floors? Just highlight the West Tower, and little else. The Liverpool is lucky to have these 3 highrises have made next to the Mersey, and doesn't cover anything. Those same buildings in the center barely deployed and certainly wouldn't be so nice.

It serves infinitely better to its purposes than most of those dense financial and commercial centres around the continent though.

Birmingham has a lot of potential and so it should having a population of 1million people. It is not as good as it should be for a city that big but its suffered in the past with anti high rise people that is the british public. More recently it has had to shorten towers due to silly caa regulations on building heights within the city centre after 9/11. Things are certainly looking up for the city with lots of proposals over 100m and 2 around the 200m mark, and considering Birmingham already has a half decent skyline these are going to make a big difference. I think shorter buildings do have a bigger presence on the skyline but nobody said to have the best skyline u need mega tall towers, if they form a cluster and look like a skyline they can compete and i feel that Birmingham does that.

Looking at some cities that have lots of talls that can easily laugh at Birmingham in that respect also have a lot of ugly looking towers that form most of the city skyline with the exception of a few newly built towers, i think everyone is allowed there own opinion but i feel that places like benidorm look very ugly despite having lots of highrises. Barcelona looks better in that second set of pictures but when someone posted earlier on it looked very ugly.

You folks completely forgot the famous skyline of Cologne!

It in fact is so incredible remarkable and outstanding, exactly because of it's "nonexistance". They really did put some effort into preserving the status of large cathedral as being the one single outstanding dominating building in the entire city, visible from almost anywhere.

Those last barcelona pics proove that it has a very poor skyline, any talls merge into the surroundings and dont form a skyline. For example in this pic all the tallest buildng are clearly defined and form a cohesive skyline of different styles

and an extra one because its nice

Anyway this is getting a bit absurd, with all due respect to them, neither Liverpool nor Barcelona have exactly lots of notable feature in their skyline panoramas to just care about which of both is better.
