No greeneries, no water... but also no cafés, restaurants and shops! The esplanade is just a huge area made for... nothing.

Just walking.

And that's exactly what I hate in La Défense: every functions are separated from the others in dedicated areas. There are dedicated areas to walk, dedicated areas to shop, dedicated areas to work, dedicated areas to drive, decidated areas to rest. There's no mix of everything in one and the same place !

As a matter of fact, I'm sure it wouldn't be so hard to change things. You take the large plaza, and you put there grasses, cafés, trees, boardwalks, restaurants, water, wood terraces, a large nicely designed elevated roof to protect from rain and there it is... it suddenly becomes an area that you are pleased to cross... and stay in !

That's only a small investment to make, and it would very fastly become a profitable one considering that I'm 100% sure the place would be full of people from the morning to the evening considering the density of people in the place. Because indeed, the place is actually alread full of people, the issue is that they are all burried below the slab.

Unfortunately we are in France... and putting activities on the plaza would be considered as denaturing its "grandeur"...

I was talking about the esplanade, not about La Défense in general. I don't see many people working on the esplanade.

Humm....I will be kind, so I won't make any comment about a word compared to another !

BUT, about the "esplanade", of course there are many people who work there, maybe not "ON" but nearby or under it (as you already know) !!!

Yes. What I hate in La Défense is that it looks, at street level, as a cold and empty place... a feeling which would be changed if the esplanade would be laid out in such a way that people would actually want to stay on it. The esplanade is the center of La Défense, so it's rather obvious to me that changing it would be enough to change the feel of the whole district.

The espanade is an empty place where there are only people walking. Of course there are tons of people below it - I've alread told so - but the place would be a lot warmer and alive if they were all on it. That's my whole point.

Am I really that hard to understand? When I read again my posts the idea sounds pretty clear.

Sure you were very clear, but, as many Parisians, you want to change LD into another "quartier-latin", which will never happen..... that is my point !

I don't want to change it to a quartier latin... I just want it to become human-friendly.

And my references weren't actually Parisian, it was Kowloon Harbour Mall and IFC Mall in HK or Queen Street Mall in Brisbane. I don't believe by the way there are many boardwalks or nicely designed plaza roof in the quartier latin...

I think we have a totally outdated perception of what a mall is in France. The only decent example I can think of a mall in Paris is probably the passage du Havre near Saint-Lazare.... and maybe Bercy Village in some way.

Passage du Havre is not my favorite one in Paris but, yes, it's a good compromise & Bercy Village is not a "real mall".

You forgot :
Passy-Plaza, "La Grand Place" in Boulogne-Bill. & BeauGrenelle (under refurbishment), which are proper Parisian malls !

Anyway, to be honest, we don't need "malls" in our city-centres (even at la Défense), because in France we have places known as "les Grands Magasins"...... !
Maybe I'm conservative.....

Yes, Bercy Village is a real mall, only a modern one. And that's exactly here that you prove my point about French people having an outdated perception of what a mall is. No worries, I was like you just a week ago.

Those are all outdated 70's-minded malls. They lack of greeneries and are narrow and obscure with low ceilings and no natural light.

Les grands magasins are not enough. The whole area between Saint-Lazare and Opéra could become a galaxy of malls. Don't forget there are 12 million consumers in the Paris area. It would be better if they would shop in downtown Paris rather than beside a motorway (as they actually do now).

As a matter of fact, we definitly need malls in our city centers. It's the only way to keep them alive. I would even say it's a matter of survival. And I'm not kidding.

But anyway, we're getting far from the topic. Having gardens, water and terraces in the center of La Défense esplanade could only be a great thing for the 150,000 people working in the area. I hardly see how we can be against that.

Have to say, that Rotterdam barricade wouldn't pass muster here.
