JELGAVA | Projects & Construction | Projekti un Būvniecība

Short introduction
Neliels ievads

Hi, and welcome to Jelgava development thread! The following is a short introduction about the town for you to get familiar with it, of course you can read more about the history of Jelgava by clicking here. So off we go! Jelgava town looked a lot better before WWII, it was completely destroyed during the war. In fact, you can view old photos of Jelgava here: http://www.zudusilatvija.lv/objects/...on/678/?page=4

Some monuments of old Jelgava still remain today, but most parts of the town were rebuilt as a industrial suburb of Riga in style of 1960's & 1980's. Instead of narrow medieval streets, now there are wide boulevards with trees and a lot of boring type buildings and so called - "commieblocks".

Jelgava was comparatively poor, untill recent times, it has seen a revival and has quickly gained some wealth. Jelgava unexpectedly became the third richest municipality in Latvia after Riga and Daugavpils. The location of the town is very advantageous, it's located just 40 km south of Riga, with a frequent train connection and a very good highway, going from Jelgava to Riga center with a car takes some 40 minutes.

No, it's not the train station. The pic is old and taken form wikipedia. That building what you though as a train station was Jelgavas cinema building, but what's happened to it today, see in previous post.

There isn't a cinema building at the moment in Jelgava. And I haven't heard of building a new one.

Do you think that cinema has a chance to survive in medium sized towns in modern times?
700k city of Riga for a while also had just one cinema (although with 14 halls).

Jelgava is interesting because of it's industrial activities. When earlier industry collapsed, town survived mainly because of vicinity to Riga. Now the municipal budget is the third largest in Latvia, ahead of Liepaja, Jurmala, Ventspils.

Well, there is one cinema even in Olaine (24 km from Riga, 14K inhabitants), or was there last year when I visited that place.
