Great thread Ripley! Good to see a known city to me developing as well. Many members of my family live there nearby - in Livberze.

Before this, when construction began on ZOC, in a place where now are constructed the tribines there was standing a water-tower. For years it wasn't working because the pipes where rusted. The tower was obstructive and had to brought down. On April 24th 2007 it all began, first workers banded towers abovest part with a cable and then using excavators rummer, they smashed the towers belowest walls so that it could be easily pulled down using two other excavators without a hitch. Did it work? See in this video:

That's a common commieblock shown above my post, in these forums it is impossible to impress with it. Jelgava has got many interesting other things done recently - renovation works at palace, construction materials testing centre, gallery "Pasāža" and more.

The sounds were making students since it's located next to Jelgavas 4th middle school and the funny thing is, this video was filmed by this schools principal!

Why only impressive posts should be posted? I think, the forum basically is exchange of information, not just showoff. For me, it's interesting to see every kind of development, even such boring commieblocks. Keep posting, Ripley!

Once in Baltic states the largest bath-house and swimming complex in the 80's of the past century was in Latvia a pride of all Soviet Union, but later it reformed for an setteled of unreadable merchants center. Now it regenerates in a new quality and already in the end of this year hold work alongside electronic shop and sport center doors will open also a restaurant. But yet through a year there will be the first bowling in Jelgava, what will work also in night.

2006 year

Finished reconstruction/buildings in Jelgava in the last years.

The recreation center was reconstructed in 2006 on Kr.Barona street.

The new main mail building was built in 2006 on Katoļu street. (The red building on the left is going to be demolished next year and on it's place will be built a new parking lot)

The new BITC lab on the right side of Lielupe river was built in 2006.

That construction materials centre building still looks too lonely. They planned a tremendous development in this area - high tech industrial zone. Location is excellent - here, at the Lielupe river and bridge could be located the new centrum of the city, just like Kipsala district for Riga. Crossing fingers for their success...

Btw. Riga-Jelgava highway still is planned as the only real highway (or motorway - call as you like) in Latvia. The standards for motorways are considerably higher than in neigbouring countries - f.e. with these standards Lithuania would not have a single kilometre of highways, just expressways). Why? Don't know, sorry. Whatever, be prepared to see some heavenly jevel of a road somewhere in future. Ongoing draft design and preparation for PPP tender.

I really hope this area will develop soon, also there was planned to be built a new police station and a small living massif.

Yes, I heard about this planned highway too. I don't know much about, only that it will have 7 2-level crossings and the allowed speed will be 130 km/h.

Anyway that's the best road news of the whole Baltics! That's so cool to hear that! I really hope the crisis wouldn't stop it's construction!

Don't think that other Baltic states would be that much impressed with this, especially seeing most other roads in Latvia.

Good to have news from Jelgava, it is the second city in Latvia where I have the most business... I like it.

For cinemas, there is one in Baldone, it is far from being Jelgava. Jelgava can afford easily a 4, 6 or 8 rooms cinema without problem. Need to make a strong marketing study though. But it is normal. Don't forget people that live also around Jelgava... It makes the potential bigger.

For the sad things about Jelgava, it seems that the new Aerodiumor I don't know if it is a competitor of Aerodium is at halt for a while. Although, the building sems almost finished.

For the excellent things in Jelgava, there is the first recycling park where individuals an bring their separated bottles, cardboard, etc. Way to go!!! But why this is not spreading all over Latvia? This is so simple...

Thanks for your posts Ripley!

It was opened two months ago.

New apartment house in Ozolnieki

Ozolnieki is located northeast in Jelgavas suburbs. Where a new 3-5 storey house called "Iecavkrasti" is almost finished. It's located in a wonderful green area near Iecava river. The house complex will be done in the end of this year.

My last year's pics of Jelgava central shopping areas:

The city centre is reconstructed in last years, large investments in shopping areas, so Jelgava has nice shopping centre "Pilsētas Pasāža" (The City Arcade) and other supermarkets and smaller shops. Shopping area here occupies quite large territory.

"The City Arcade"
