This probably happens only in Bucharest.

ooops, No, Romanian is the official language in Romania.

That picture was taken in Budapest, Hungary. I flew from Damascus to Bucharest via Budapest on Malev airlines. And back to the States via Amsterdan on KLM airlines. I did so much traveling this summer, I'm getting confused.

Good eyes for picking it up.

I also found it weird as I've been to Bucharest as well hah. Did you like the city? Because I was really disappointed. I thought there would be some more nice areas with those french looking buildings or some modern stuff. Some people said Piatsa Romana was the core of downtown and I got a bit scared at that place, a bit too chaotic for me. On the other hand, the area around the parliament looks too monotonous. IMO Romania has far better cities than Bucharest to offer, it should not be the focus for a trip to the country.

Did you go there on business?

Bucharest used to be beautiful before a certain dictator demolished the oldest and most charming quarters. Nicolae was inspired by Pyongyang. That is why the newer parts of Bucharest are so odd looking. Don't be so hard on Bucharest it has been through some terrible times. Bucharest also lost a lot during a terrible earthquake. Not too long ago hot water was available on certain days. Also, some pizza places use ketchup instead of sauce. Bucharest is not Paris and is not Rome. It is a slowly emerging city that was a failed sociological experiment for years. It was more like Istanbul with its history and heritage but now that is all gone and it is merely a shell of its former glory much like Belgrade, Baghdad or Beirut. Also, Romania was a very poor country for years. Seeing how it looks today is a lot more encouraging for its future. At least Bucharest has a metro (subway) and tram system. I can only think of a few American cities that can claim that. In that sense they are light years ahead of most American cities.

Thanks philadweller for the nice comments.

Bucharest lost a lot of it's charm when the big demolitions began, to make room for our dictator's communist buildings A lot, and i mean a really lot of the historical buildings/places were demolished

Today, Bucharest is developing at a high speed, but this makes the city very chaotic. I study at a university situated in the above-named Piata Romana (Romana Square), and to be honest, i find the area very chaotic and ugly. But comparing the current situation to the one a few years ago, things are definetly better and improving.
What i don't like about Bucharest (besides the crazy traffic) is that most of the old buildings are in a horrible shape. They need urgent renovations. If they would be renovated, the aspect of the city would increase a lot.

Cheers

Where I saw the most beautiful buildings in the city was in some area close to a red orthodox church, which was also really beautiful. There's also a very impressive and beautiful building on an avenue on the river shore. But to be honest I got a bit disappointed and I sort of lost the motivation to continue walking around. But that's OK because the trip was still great as Transylvania enchanted me and the food over there is amazing.
