Sydney wins best city again!
![]() i think for Australia, melbourne got second and canberra last. http://www.hospitalitymagazine.com.a...ld/428387.aspx Sydney voted top city in the world ![]() Sydney has been voted the number one city in the world for the 13th time at the prestigious Conde Nast Traveller Awards in New York, the Minister for Tourism Jodi McKay announced today. For a record 20th year in a row, readers of the influential American travel magazine also voted Sydney the top city in the Australia-Pacific Cities category. “13 years at number one and 20 in a row as the best city in the Australia Pacific region is a fantastic achievement and a strong endorsement by the discerning readers of Conde Nast,” McKay said. The magazine described Sydney as; Laid-back, vibrant and gorgeous. The city has food to rival any in the world, and is at the forefront of cutting-edge design, with chic hotels and excellent restaurants. In the Awards, Sydney outranked other global cities including San Francisco, Florence and Cape Town. Conde Nast Traveller magazine has a paid circulation of 770,000 in the US and a readership of 3.1 million. “Our laid-back lifestyle along with the city’s iconic attractions, the beauty of our natural environment, the eclectic nightlife and gourmet restaurants are part of what makes Sydney so appealing to international visitors,” Mckay said. The Awards have been running for 21 years and Sydney has won the top city award from 1988 – 2008 in the Asia Pacific Cities category.

well, as we absorb "melbourne style small bars and melbourne style laneways and melbourne style style" there truely won't be any competition.

I guess good urban planning and natural environment are two main factors make Sydney become the first one in the world.

It is good to see our facade has not crumbled, god forbid if these "voters' actually spend some decent time time here, I am sure Beirut would score better than us otherwise :op

^ well in the eyes of the mags readers, it is the best. everything is in context. i'm sure if it was a survey of "taliban weekly" readers sydney would be towards the bottom.

You would be surprised. Having been to NYC, HK and Chicago along with a slew of cities in Europe (Spain, Greece, Italy, Cyprus) and Sydney holds up quite well. When you put everything together (food, climate, beauty, attractions, lifestyle (the beaches esp), people, shopping, transport (def a weak point) and nature) it does hold it's own. The best is totally subjective but it's a great city nonetheless.

Sydney will always be respected for it's laid back lifestyle. It's a big city that enjoys connecting to nature and while we work hard, we know that everything will be fine. But yes even with the downturn, Sydney has become more affordable to foreigners, so this should keep the dollars flowing in.

Sydney doesnt need to have Paris' flair o Tokyo buzz, it has its own feel much like Melbourne and thats what makes them unique. Well done Sydney.
p.s someone should post this in a folder so other people from all over the world can have a read. The comments would be interesting. |

Sorry William, our urban planning is SHIT. But... I don't really care. I still love this city and wouldn't live anywhere else. All great cities have their downsides, I just factor Sydney's crap transport and terrible traffic into my life. It's worth the sacrifice.

Good work Sydney, but I think the thing that Sydney has going for it is a strong brand thanks to being the largest city in Australia, the olympics etc.. however IMO for Sydney to step up a notch it needs alot of work for example I would like wider footpaths in the CBD, and the traffic issues sorted out, I prefer visiting melbourne, because the cbd imo has a better and more relaxed vibe, sydney is to busy and un-planned.

LOL I can think of a few higher priorities than for wider footpaths!

But I think Sydney better urban plan than most Taiwanese cities. Taipei has costed a lot of money with its poor urban planning. The community cost is extremely huge. |
