Surveillance camera system launched
Kozhikode: The traffic wing has put into operation the surveillance camera system at the Rajaji Road junction in the city. City Police Commissioner S. Sreejith launched the functioning of Internet protocol network camera at the traffic police control office attached to his office on Thursday. The camera captures pictures and video images that can be viewed live on a computer via a modem. The system serves the purpose of controlling traffic, curbing crime and getting an overview of the area. It also helps the police to identify trouble-makers at protest rallies. The broadband Internet facility provides live streaming of the busy junction. The video images can be viewed by anyone having access to user name and password of the system. The traffic wing could also maintain a database of the images in specified folders. It also has sensor facilities for auto-zooming to capture frames of traffic blockages and crowd. The camera has already captured 30 traffic offenders during its experimental stage in the past few months. A trial run of the system was held last year. The high-end camera can capture images up to a distance of one-km on either sides of the road. It also has the capacity to capture image during night hours. Sponsorship The cost of a camera comes up to Rs.1.3 lakh. The traffic wing has secured a one-year sponsorship for providing the Internet solution and maintenance. The city police have planned to install such surveillance cameras in eight places in the city. The places have not been identified but they will possibly come up at the Mofussil bus station, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus station, Palayam junction and Railway station road. Financial support The traffic wing will make an attempt to get financial support for the project from the fund allocated for modernisation programme. Assistant Commissioners of Police (Traffic) B. Prasannan Nair and K. Rajendran were present during the launch of the system.

Land acquisition to begin for road development work
KOZHIKODE: The district administration has sought public support for straightening a curve on National Highway 17 at Kulangara Kavala, West Hill, to bring down the number of accidents there. A multi-party meeting at the Collectorate on Wednesday decided to initiate land acquisition to straighten the curve. District Collector P.B. Saleem, who presided over the meeting, sought public support to relocate the structures in the area so that the work could be taken up. Representatives of the Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, who were present, declared support to the proposal. The representative of the Kasi Math located in the area, which had objected to the move, promised at the meeting that the matter would be taken up with the math’s management. Collector optimistic The District Collector expressed the hope that the math would cooperate with the move. The meeting was called since it was decided at a meeting held to discuss this matter on July 2 that the math should be consulted before a decision was taken. The Executive Engineer, National Highways, in a report submitted to the District Collector way back on November 20, 1996, had suggested that the curve be straightened to lower the risk of accidents. As much as 37.41 cents (0.15 hectare) of land would have to be acquired. The math’s power of attorney had moved the munsiff’s court and then the Kerala High Court to block the acquisition. The court rejected the petition on the ground that it would not affect the math or its properties. But the court ordered that since a small portion of a building used by the math employees would be affected, utmost care should be taken when it was demolished. The math had again moved the High Court against the move. After the court rejected that petition, the notice for land acquisition was issued. The math was given a month’s time to relocate the building. However, the math did not respond to the acquisition notice even after a month. It was against this background that the meetings were held.
