How ridiculous, so now we can't build things because the police might have to work a bit harder to catch the criminals who steal this material on site. What do they suggest we clad buildings in?

I actually quite like this venue. I thought I should say so considering how much I railed against the appalling stadium design and dumbed down parks and bridges, but this is actually quite a simple elegant building. Seriously, it's a big room to play handball in (I'm hazy about what that even is), it doesn't need to be crazy. it's well proportioned, decent materials - just correct basically.

Well done MAKE. They've a tendancy to overdo it that's puts me off, but this I like.

Ignore the police 'warning'. Some journalist trying to make a story out of nothing.

If the police had their way there'd be nothing but vast open spaces intersperced with CCTV cameras.

I remember doing a regeneration project for shepherds bush green when i was at uni, we asked the police how they felt the square could be improved to reduce crime - their answer "cut down the trees, remove all the vegitation and enclose the space so people can't gain entry after dark"

But in this situation i suppose they do have a point, copper is quite a high value material and some people might go to quite audacious lengths to get hold of it. The police are just pointing out where they see a potential risk. I can't imagine there will be any major changes though.

well instead of cutting down trees. just use tall trees. that dont attract vagrants and ensure good ground level visibility.

but you are right. the excessive consultation and associated costs are killing many projects including the National Football Academy, which is now starting the process again after dropping the architects.(after a second competition).

Hmm well maybe we shouldn't consult the police.

Could we electrify it? The people inside would be fine as it'd be a Faraday cage effect, but if anyone tries to steal the copper...bzzzzzzzz!!!!

London 2012 Handball Arena and legacy multi-sports venue gets planning go ahead
11 February 2009

The London 2012 Handball Arena, that will become a new multi-sports facility in legacy, is on track for construction to start this summer following a meeting last night where the ODA Planning Committee resolved to approve the planning application.

The recommendation will now go to the Greater London Authority (GLA) for approval before permission for the applications is granted.

Before the planning application was submitted for the Handball Arena sports users, local people, faith groups, community groups and young people were all consulted on the detailed plans. Their comments were then taken on board when the planning application was made.

Olympic Delivery Authority Chief Executive David Higgins said: 'This takes us a step closer towards a simple, sustainable and flexible Handball Arena that works for Games and legacy. Construction is on track to start this summer on the Arena which will provide a great experience for competitors and spectators during the Games and offer a new facility for local people to enjoy a range of sports in legacy.'

Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee, said: 'This is another example of the Games acting as a catalyst for change. This facility will be a high-quality venue at Games-time but also provides a legacy for sport in London and the UK. The fact that Handball will have its own arena at Games-time will be a great boost to the sport in this country, and it will be a much used multi-purpose arena after the Games.'

The Handball Arena will be in the west of the Olympic Park, to the south of the Hockey Centre, within four minutes of the Olympic Village. It will have up to 7,000 seats during the Games, hosting the Handball preliminaries and quarter finals as well as the Modern Pentathlon discipline of Fencing. It will also be the Goalball venue during the Paralympic Games.

In legacy mode after the Games, the Arena will become a multi-sports venue with retractable seating for 6,000 spectators and flexible facilities to hold a range of training and competition events of all levels. It will cater for a wide-range of indoor sports including Basketball, Handball, Badminton, Netball and Volleyball boosting the sporting facilities provided across the Olympic Park.

The Handball Arena, designed by Make Architects with PTW and Arup, features external copper cladding to give it a distinctive appearance that will develop a rich natural colour as it ages. The concourse level features glazing which encircles the building, enabling visitors to the Olympic Park to view sport taking place inside, and illuminating the venue when lit at night. The venue also has a vibrant and multi-coloured interior, with retractable seating to create a flexible space and with 100 light pipes in the ceiling to allow natural light into the venue.

Jules Pipe, elected Mayor of Hackney, said: 'The new multi-sports venue is a major opportunity to develop a world class centre for Hackney residents which is accessible and suitable for a range of community sports as part of the legacy of the 2012 Games. Hackney already has high quality, award-winning sports and leisure centres, and the Council is continuing to invest in these to offer all our residents access to healthier lifestyles through sport and physical activity. We will continue working to ensure that, when London's Olympic and Paralympic Games have gone, the multi-sports Arena will remain as a venue for local people and visitors.'

Design features in the Handball Arena plans include:

Over 3,000 sq m of external copper cladding, mostly recycled, that changes colour and character as it ages

Over 700 sq m of glazing which encircles the building at concourse level opening up the venue to the Olympic Park and enabling visitors to watch sporting action

striking multicoloured seating that retracts to enable flexible use of the field of play

100 light pipes in the ceiling that draw sunlight into the venue, reducing the demand for electric lights

rainwater harvesting from the roof for toilet flushing, helping to reduce water use by 40 per cent

Range of materials selected for long-term durability and performance
In legacy mode the venue will include a health and fitness club with changing facilities and a café for use by the local community

In legacy mode, the venue offers a 2,743 sq m field of play hosting sports including: 5-a-side football; Netball; Basketball; Volleyball; Badminton; Table Tennis; Handball; and Futsal

The venue could also host in legacy: Hockey; Martial arts; Kabaddi; Dodgeball; Wheelchair Basketball; Fencing; Sitting Volleyball; Goalball; Wheelchair Rugby, Wrestling, Weightlifting, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, Judo and Fencing.

Questionable choice of cladding but then an invisible sport perhaps merits an invisible house.I feel ambivalent about this .

I think the cladding might get scrapped. There are so many other cool alternatives.

Kids in hoodies from nearby neighborhoods will start ripping off the copper in a few days after the venue is built.

They have this cool copper coloured cladding in Guangzhou.

Buckingham Group wins 2012 handball arena contract
26 March, 2009
By Sophie Griffiths

Make Architects will oversee detailed design process of Olympic venue

Buckingham Group Contracting has been appointed as the building contractor for the 2012 handball arena.

Planning permission for the London 2012 venue was granted last month, and the site has been cleared for construction to begin this summer.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) said the decision to appoint Buckingham Group followed the firm's joint successful delivery with HOK Sport of the MK Dons stadium in Milton Keynes. The pair will now join up again for the detailed design and construction of the handball arena.

Buckingham Group has previous experience of delivering other sports venues, including football stadiums and racing circuits.

Make Architects will oversee the detailed design process on behalf of the ODA.

David Higgins, ODA chief executive, said: “This appointment takes us a step closer towards a simple, sustainable and flexible handball arena that works for Games and legacy.”

Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London 2012 organising committee added: “The fact that handball will have its own arena at Games-time will be a great boost to the sport in this country, and it will be a much used multi-purpose arena after the Games.”

The arena will be in the west of the Olympic Park, to the south of the hockey centre.

It will hold up to 7,000 seats during the Games, hosting the handball preliminaries and quarterfinals as well as the modern pentathlon discipline of fencing. It will also form the goalball venue during the Paralympic Games.

After 2012, the arena will become a multi-sports venue with retractable seating for 6,000 spectators, and flexible facilities to hold a range of training and competition events.

Design features include over 3,000m2 of external copper cladding, mostly recycled, which changes colour as it ages, and rainwater harvesting from the roof for toilet flushing, reducing water use by 40%.

Big build of Handball Arena starts early as work underway on all Olympic Park venues
20 July 2009

The start of construction on the Handball Arena two months early marked the moment the ‘big build’ got underway on all new permanent venues for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

During the Games the distinctive copper-clad Handball Arena will host qualifying games for the Handball competition as well as Modern Pentathlon Fencing and Goalball during the Paralympic Games.

After the Games, the sustainable and distinctive Arena will become a multi-sports venue with retractable seating for around 6,000 spectators and flexible facilities catering for training and competition at all levels. It can cater for a wide-range of indoor sports including Basketball, Wheelchair Basketball, Boxing, Handball, Badminton, Judo, Netball, Futsal and Volleyball, boosting the legacy sporting facilities provided across the Olympic Park.

Construction is now underway on the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, Olympic Village, IBC/MPC, Velodrome as well as roads, bridges and infrastructure right across the Olympic Park. The sailing facilities at Weymouth and Portland were completed last year and work recently started on the White Water Canoe Centre in Broxbourne.

Olympic Delivery Authority Chairman John Armitt said: 'The "big build" is on track and the permanent venues that will host a fantastic festival in 2012 and provide a sporting legacy for elite athletes and communities are taking shape. The vibrant Handball Arena will provide a great experience for competitors and spectators during the Games and offer a new sustainable and flexible facility for local people to enjoy a wide range of sports in legacy'

Chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee Sebastian Coe said: 'This is another example of the Games acting as a catalyst for change. The fact that Handball will have its own arena at Games-time will be a great boost to the sport in this country, and it will be a much used multi-purpose arena after the Games. It is fantastic to see construction underway at the Arena and on all the venues in the Olympic Park.'

The London Development Agency (LDA) has been leading on the legacy planning for the Handball Arena. This work, which also includes ongoing discussions with National Governing Bodies for Sport and other sporting bodies, will be taken forward by the new Olympic Park Legacy Company which is due to take over legacy planning later this year.

Chief Executive of the London Development Agency Peter Rogers said: 'The Arena will be a major community resource in legacy. With the equivalent space of 12 badminton courts and retractable seating, the venue has been designed for all levels of sports participation and has the potential to accommodate cultural, entertainment and business events.

'We are delighted to have reached this milestone and look forward to a smooth transition of the project over to the Olympic Park Legacy Company.'

Jules Pipe, elected Mayor of Hackney, said: 'The new multi-sports venue in Hackney is a great opportunity to offer local residents access to world-class facilities to take part in a wide range of sports, as part of the legacy of the 2012 Games. The Council will continue its work to offer all our residents further opportunities to enjoy healthy lifestyles through sport and physical activity.'

come on you gotta have at least 1 or 2 venues with a chance of being behind schedule!
what will they write about? they cant write about venues completed early, an olympic stadium finished in 2010, aquatic centre ready well before the games.

be nice, give them something to write about!

Nice Arena... though it's a bit weird that handball will get its own arena considering that the sport isn't big in UK as in continental Europe.

Its more to do with the legacy potential of the venue, the new Handball Arena isnt going to be huge which makes it perfect for conversion into a multiuse hall(s) for badminton/5 a side indoor football etc etc that will certainly be used by the locals.
