The new airports in Turkey, Kars, Sivas and Erzincan really shows the development that Turkey is in. I mean, 4-5 years ago, we would think that such a project in Ankara or Izmir was impossible!!

Istanbul traffic gridlock moves to the sky

Friday, November 5, 2010
IŞIL EĞRİKAVUK
ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News

Debate over the necessity of a third airport in Istanbul has taken off with business representatives and city planners disagreeing on every aspect of the plan to build a new airport on the outskirts of the city. While major airline companies underline the lack of capacity at existing airports, opponents point to the dangers of constructing a new airport in one of Istanbul’s rare farmland areas

With more than 40 million annual passengers and growing fast, Istanbul’s traffic jam in the sky could soon make gridlock on the city’s motorways look like an open autobahn.

Recently announced plans to relieve the pressure with a new suburban airport, however, are adding to the concerns of urban planners, architects and activists already pained by the city’s haphazard growth and seeming disregard for the environment.

The idea for a third airport, announced last week by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has opened a new front in the battle over urban development in Turkey’s biggest city, which is already under siege by activists protesting the construction of a third bridge over the Bosphorus.

"It is hard to find this type of land so close to Istanbul, a city with almost no green space left," Silivri Environment Society President Ali Korsan told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review.

"We don't want an airport in our town," he said.

Erdoğan, speaking last week at a ceremony for Turkish Airlines, or THY, said a new airport was essential because Istanbul’s existing two airports do not have enough capacity for current air traffic levels and delays are bound to become intolerable.

"Our airports do not serve the needs of passengers. That's why we have so many delays," said Erdoğan. "We want to avoid it getting any worse."

Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş confirmed the prime minister’s comments on Monday. Topbaş said the new airport would be on the European side in Silivri, 60 kilometers from the city’s central districts. He also said the new airport had already been integrated into the city’s plans.

"That area is totally comprised of productive farmland. Building an airport in that area means killing those fields," Tayfun Kahraman, secretary-general of the Istanbul branch of the Chamber of City Planners, told the Daily News.

Traffic problems

Istanbul currently has two airports, Atatürk and Sabiha Gökçen, offering domestic and international flights. Many people, however, have said Atatürk Airport has insufficient capacity to meet the increasing demand for flights and the insufficient number of runways is only going to cause more and longer delays. Not only passengers, but also airline companies have complained about the delays.

"We are growing very fast and increasing our routes everyday," Hamdi Topçu, head of THY, told the Daily News. "But the infrastructure of Atatürk Airport doesn't fulfill our needs."

"The increasing number of international flights makes it difficult for Turkish companies to compete with the others," said Talha Görgülü, board chairman of SKY Airlines. "I don't think it is a bad choice to build a new airport in Silivri. Plus, we have a highway that connects the area to the city."

Some also say a new airport would help expand Turkey’s aviation market.

"Istanbul is a megacity, a true center of commerce, tourism and industry," Paul Schwaiger, general manager of Sun Express, told the Daily News. "Any growth in runway, terminal, passenger or cargo capacity will eventually result in overall growth for the aviation market.”

According to General Directorate of State Airports Authority, or DHMİ, head Ali Arıduru, the number of domestic flights in recent years has increased dramatically. "In 2002 we had 8.7 million domestic passengers; by 2009 it was 41 million," Arıduru said. "We forecast 10 percent growth every year, and to keep pace requires building more airports."

Jamming up the skies

"Everyone knew Istanbul's air traffic would become overcrowded, but there was no plan for expanding Atatürk Airport," said journalist Güntay Şimşek. "Its surrounding area was filled with buildings and shopping malls, and nobody opposed that. Still, I think that by building a new runway and having faster air security systems, this airport can be made more functional. Instead of building a new [airport], we should first make use of the existing one."

Istanbul Chamber of Architects Chairman Eyüp Muhçu agrees. "Instead of being a solution, building a new airport might cause even more problems," Muhçu told the Daily News. “It is not enough to construct the airport by itself; the municipality needs to think about how to connect the airport to the city with a railway system. Istanbul already has huge traffic problems and such a plan might very well make them worse."

City planner Kahraman offered another solution. "There is already another airport in Çorlu,” he said. “It is only 30 kilometers away from the newly planned area and nearly unused. Instead of starting from scratch, why doesn't the city make use of it?"

Kahraman also gave Berlin as an example. "In Berlin, they turned an insufficient inner-city airport, Tempelhof, into a park and relocated everything to the outskirts of the city. We could also follow this model."

He said another possible model to follow is the Chek Lap Kok Terminal at Hong Kong's main airport, which is built on an island due to the lack of space in the city.

Land values take off

While the debates continue, land prices in the Silivri area have increased rapidly. "Compared to 2007, land prices in Silivri have increased 200 percent," Nizamettin Aşa, vice president of the Istanbul Real Estate Agencies Association, told the Daily News.

"I am trying to organize the landowners, especially farmers, and convince them to resist selling their land," said Korsan. "I have farmland and I will never sell it."

I'm flying Turkish Airlines First Class next time. Your modern airports makes many of Europe's and the United States' look old-fashioned.

That's an interesting design. A departure from the usual design of airports.

Recently started Turkish operating the A330F (cargo)

I saw that this type of aircraft was some different comparing with the A330 for Pax!
The nosewheel is to short for leveling the cargo floor!
So Airbus designed a solution for " bringing" to make the aircraft horizontal
see http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=7014932
