Awesome pic! I think the core section surrounding the crane should reach street level by the end of June. I saw on earthcam this morning they did another concrete pour. Fantastic progess!

WTC Tower 4 Utility Work on Liberty Street

May 6, 2009

Night utility work began this week on Liberty Street to tie in water and sewer connections to 4 World Trade Center. The work is taking place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, closing Liberty Street to vehicular traffic west of Church Street. It is expected to continue through early August, about the same time the future 64-story structure will reach street level.

Cropped this picture from rebuildgroundzero's webcam. Looks like the B1 level formworks have been put up around the crane. They must be only 5-10 feet below street level now!

Yeah, Tower 4 should be ground level in another month or so. It's going extremely fast. If only Silverstein could get the other two towers started now...

as a Brit, obvious biased fan of Rogers and Foster, I'm a little gutted that this is going up ahead of Towers 2 and 3. Personally think the Rogers Tower 3 is the best of the designs, with Tower 2 having the real 'wow' factor. At least there's two towers underway. Exciting times despite the uncertainty regarding 2 and 3.

It's working on the demolition of the DeutchBank building which was damaged and had severe contamination issues after 9/11. It has to be one of the slowest demolition projects in history.

Yes, asbestos is part of the construction and they need to get rid of it by hand floor by floor before they can demolish that same floor of the building. They haven't assigned many workers to it, since obvously the maority of the costs for labor have been assigned for construction in the main part of the site ( 1wtc, memorial and rest of the wtc site). Then you can add the fact that several accidents have occurred (workers getting hurt and a fire that stopped decontruction for several months). And no, demolition of the structure didn't start on september 12th, so it hasn't taken 8 years. I'm actually surprised they did that much work given the quantity of worker they have. A building in Europe where my father works started taking the asbestos out in the 90's and still haven't finished. And it's not a skyscraper but the average european building 6 stories tall. And they don't even have to demolish it.

p.s. were you referring to the shortest of the towers u/c in the back of the picture? because that's the tower being deconstructed, while the taller tower right behind it is a highrise u/c : http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...=633246&page=6

Yeah, it's a very slow process. Many say it's better to just leave the asbestos where it is, rather than spend the time and money to get rid of it, and possibly risk exposure.

so slow? tower 4? are you joking? I don't think I've ever seen the underground structure of a building shoot up so fast. And no, tower 2 and 3 haven't been scrapped, not yet at least.

Tower 4 has been flying along. It's been fastest project on the site since 7WTC; and that's because it's Silverstein's project, not The Port Authority's. The foundations will be street level in another month or so. Tower 4 is expected to be completed before Freedom is.

Currently tower 2 and 3 have not been cancelled. The Port Authority wants to put retail podiums in place of Tower 2 and 3, until the economy gets better. Right now there is a glut of office space in New York City. But Silverstein wants at least one of the other towers built. He may get his way. Possibly Tower 2.

'shoot up' is the most suitable phrase to describe the progress of this tower for sure.

Towers 2 and 3 are the most architecturally impressive. Tower 2 may be built now, and 3 later. We'll see what happens. The site just would not be complete without them.

Here is also what 4WTC looked like in October of last year, you can compare. There was nothing there even. They have almost completed the foundations in less than a year.
