Check Out Cortlandt Way, the New Shopping Street Taking Shape at the WTC

"Today, the Port Authority moved closer to realizing every shopaholicís dream (and really, how many New Yorkers arenít shopaholics?) by authorizing construction for Cortlandt Way. An above-ground shopping concourse running along between Towers 3 and 4 where Cortlandt Street would be if it continued onto the site, it will serve as an anchor for the retail throughout the site, including the below-ground portions between and within the towers. The new shops are also seen as a catalyst for retail development throughout Lower Manhattan."

So, i guess oklahoma city didn't teach anyone anything. That beam and post arrangement for the lobby is so totally unsafe for a building of that height given where it is being built. All anyone who doesn't like usa or that building has to do is park a truck with enough stuff in it and down comes the whole thing across the street and into the memorial. Aside from that it's rather bland. I hope it doesn't end up like #7 big fortified metal monstrosity at street level.

spambot

I love the layout for the base of these buildings. It will be nicer than the pedestrian area in the old complex, IMO.

it sure looks good in that render. At this moment it is still a construction site.

Looks like they're removing the second external elevator on the northern side!

So cladding can soon fill the gap! Do they first have to fireproof the areas where the external hoists had been installed, or did they include this area when they did the fireproofing for the rest of the floors? (Just wondering, because they didn't put up those white protective coverings in these areas - the ones that are now close to the top - and the metal beams still have their original color, not the brighter one they typically have after fireproofing)

I would think they need to apply fireproofing first.

1 floor takes about 8 days, so if we are lucky before the end of the year I think.

I think you guys are talking about the west side, IE the face that stops at the mechanical level and faces the memorial. It's been done for months. The south side is no farther than the other sides of the building above the set-back.

Thanks, good to know! Though I expected from billgates enthusiasm that they are filling the elevator gap already.. but at least the south side is catching up, so that they can start the next row soon..

No, we're both talking about the south side, I know what billgates is talking about. Up until a few days ago the the south side was lagging behind the other faces when it came to the glass. When he said "filled in" he meant that the glass work had caught up and is now up to the same floor as the other sides.

(originally posted by Noll on SSP)

Pics by John O' Shea, construction worker at 4 WTC.

Concrete walls being formed (shuttered) as the solid core of Tower-4 nears completion.

From the roof of Tower-4 with The Freedom Tower in the background. Then you see the Hudson River and New Jersey away in the distance.

72nd floor at Tower-4!! Some serious steel re-inforcing bars going into these walls before the concrete is poured. Note... the bars don't just overlap, they are joined together at the ends using 20 inch steel couplings with several large set-screws. "Built to last"!!

The final "back-up" generator being lowered with the crane onto a concrete pad near the roof of Tower-4. There are several of these giant machines on various floors throughout the building and will provide emergency power in the event of an outage.

Ironworkers putting the finishing touches to a few of the last steel beams atop Tower-4 at the World Trade Center.

Steel work is almost complete at No-4 World Trade Ctr.[/QUOTE]
