It's amazing how much 'venting' this complex has. Look at 2WTC it's a venting menagerie. Look at 1WTC the whole upper bunker area is vented and consider the vent BUILDINGS at the front of the memorial park.... Only thinking about 3WTC, I see that the vented front of the floors 'could' be prime viewing / office / trading floor space. Maybe the equipment takes up so much room because it's for the vast underground transit hub areas.

All buildings need these floors to some degree, and the larger the building the more internal support is needed. Dont forget also that the cores have special venting requirements that are beyond the average tower, due to the nature of the site's history.

I think 1WTC is unusual with all the venting (and presumably mechanical floors) in one part of the building. usually they are spread over several floors.
The twin towers had three mech areas, one on the top, and two others dividing the rest of the buildings into thirds, and Willis/Sears has four.
Based on the renders, 3WTC will have some mech floors above the podium, and then some more right at the top.

Still not very fond of the exhaust pipes, but the actually glass facade looks to be very nice!

Didn't expected that, it seemed smarter to me not to install the uppermost glass panels considering that ironworkers and fireproofers will eventually work on the floor above it.

Was just wondering that. Maybe they'll remove it when they proceed.

I love this look. The black panels and the metallic pipes give this an industrial sensibility, which will also be complemented (eventually) by the cross-bracing. Those industrial details are huge for me, because it balances out what I feel to be the more "utopian" (for lack of a better word) design elements of the master plan.

I would prefer "sterile", "raw" or "inert" over "utopian", adjectives denoting the other side of minimalism and simplicity.

"Sterile" gets at it a little bit, but the feeling I'm trying to express is a little more specific.

Maybe I'm the only one who's felt this way, but from the earliest models and renders, the complex has looked like an abstract representation of what the 21st century and beyond is supposed to look like -- like Star Trek's idealized future, with a unified Earth and the matching jumpsuits to go with it. The industrial touches mentioned above help to bring it back down to earth, as if to remind us that this is actually a functioning place of business, rather than a monument to some pristine, idyllic future that will never exist. AKA "Utopia."

I'm sorry, but those round things aren't exhaust vents. Rather, they are audio jacks for the giant sound system for the Memorial Plaza:

Very appropriate for a memorial site.

Haha! And with that comes the surprise announcement that Vox will be the anchor tenant, and the entire tower will be built out as one giant amplifier.

See, this is the kind of lateral thinking Silverstein needs to employ.
