Agreed with Otie , the new steel brings the steel portion of the podium to the 8th floor with a column splice for the 9th floor, matching the rest of the structure to a tad over the height of the core which stopped before the 8th floor level connections could be finished. The new steel brings the over all height of the podium to some ~50.5m.

I wonder why they've waited until now to install the rest of this steel? And given that crane rental is so expensive, why the TG2300 sat idle for so many months?

My guess is that this steel wasn't needed until now. It has to do with the removal of the TG2300, but I can't figure out why exactly (maybe the internal climbing system). This new steel will become a problem when they'll want to reinstall the formwork around the core (that's the reason why the core is higher than the steel), so I don't expect more of that anytime soon.

On the other hand, I might be totally wrong.

No, your guess is completely accurate.

Crane system needs to be jumped from 4th/5th floor to allow critical VSC/PA retail HVAC for installation. Yesterday the TG crane did its last pick and will be replaced with a Favco 760 during coming weeks. Remember TG cranes were banned from the city after two incidents on T4.

Too bad that crane is being removed. No quick restart of the construction of the remaining floors?

Construction won't begin until January 2014.

Building should be topped out by late 2016 and opened by mid to late 2017.

They must just be finishing the podium and just leave it as that. Like the original 4-6 WTC.

will they splice the favco tower to the link belt tower? (hence the grillage)

im considering putting money on this. only thing that squashes that idea is the fact that the steel isnt painted.
