Good info. Why did the architect choose to design it in the shape of an eye?

I haven't a clue. It has been scaled back a little. Its Wiki says it's been changed from the shape of a bird to a stegosaurus, but it looks like an eye with long eyelashes to me. I'd just assume that's why it's also known as an oculus.

A bit off topic, but traditionally in architecture, a circular opening, especially in a dome, is known as an oculus, like this one in Rome's Pantheon.

Yeah, I believe that's the definition of "oculus" being referred to here -- that big open space that works like a light well.

The white metal structure is meant to look like a bird, according to Calatrava, although I've honestly never seen it as a bird so much as a weird crustacean.

Edit: Like the shell of a venus comb:

Honestly it looks like a lot of space for Pigeons and other birds to sit on and shit all over the ground and people

I'm sure they thought about that though right

I see the problem the glass on 3WTC is so reflective that it seems to disappear after the podium. They need to install the support columns on the east face so we can see it, haha. But, seriously it does seem to have a higher quality glass than 4WTC, if that is even possible?

They scrapped that. That's why the cost is $3.4 billion and not $4.9 billion anymore.

Remember when the grating first went up and lots of people freaked out, convinced it was ugly. Some complained that the grating was horrible and should be hidden. The RCA jacks were similarly despised by some.

It seems that public opinion is changing somewhat. Grating can be either good or bad in my opinion. Just as the grill of a well designed car is appealing and a work of art, so can be the cladding for mechanical floors on skyscrapers.

Personally I find these floors to be the best of the entire building. A solid plane of featureless glass just doesn't appeal to me aesthetically. This nicely breaks up that monotony.

I've always thought it looked like a dove (and I hope it turns out like it, too.)

The design has changed since those renders were made. That's why what was already installed in the oculus last year was removed. The new design accounts for twice the number of spikes, but of a shorter length.
