So again....what is the story with this yet-to-arrive third crane and the resumption of steel erection on the east side? Does anyone have any concrete info on this? (yes....pun intended..... )

The third crane should be in by or before May. I still haven't heard what crane they will be using. (Favco M760D or Wolff 700B)

Indeed.....what is the issue holding things up? The last thing this tower needs is another delay.

Your answer is a couple of posts above.

The issue is using a crane that is banned for use in the city.

for the sake of regenerating downtown, I'm glad this thing is going ahead... but from a design perspective, I think its one of Richard Roger's least successful buildings. I know they had to eliminate a lot of elements because of budget, but its still just another glass box, in an area full of them. another shame...... IMO, the key to a beautiful new neighbourhood is a variety of materials/textures. 3 WTC was the only tower of the WTC that would have added anything other than glass! (the metal trusses) thank goodness for 30 park place!

The WTC's buildings were always somewhat uniform. I think the new ones are the same as the old ones in that fact. If any facet on that site is like the original I'm for it, even if it's uniformity.

I thought that they had decided not to use that type of crane, thus the removal of the old mast in the northeast corner... If not, them what was the point of the mast removal in the first place?

The Favco M760D is not banned in NYC but in order to be used on that job it would need to be re-configured with a shorter deck, and this modification has not yet been performed and much less approved for use in NYC.

The Wolff 700B is in production in Germany and would have to be tested before being shipped here - which would take some time. There may also be some design issue as the Wolff has to be weathervaning in case of strong winds, which might not be possible on this site due to the proximity of other buildings (WTC4 and WTC3 core) and cranes (Potain).

So all in all, it's definitely not a guarantee that one of these cranes will ne installed in May - I think it will likely be further down the road.
