What's going on with the Wolff crane? They are unreeling the main hoist cable and laying it out on top of the building. They did the same thing a few weeks ago too.

Hey everyone, so I'm not exactly an engineer so these questions may seem silly to some:

The core of 3 WTC looks huge.. MASSIVE, like it takes up 75% of every floor. And judging from the above picture where those construction workers/inspectors are standing relative to the core, the office space looks relatively small.

My question is, do cores really need to be that thick and massive? Can smaller cores be built to withstand the forces that government regulators want without taking up so much building space? Or is this just the way things are done in a post- 9/11 world?

I remember looking at blue prints of the Old Twin Towers and some other 1970s "tube" design floor plates. The cores in those buildings seemed to have been smaller allowing massive swathes of un-interrupted floor space, perhaps not the safest if you're guarding against a fully loaded jet plane or nuclear attack, but they were pretty strong.

Is that style of building feasible in today's building engineering? Or would those plans get squashed if a designer/building planned to build something out of the 70s?

No he's right. That picture is looking down at the Century 21 building.

That means the tower will barely be taller than 4 World Trade...

Just 100 feet, to be exact.

Same height to roof/parapet, just the spires are cut off. Pretty shitty if you ask me.

Wonderful, isn't it!?

I would say at this point 3 WTC has suffered the worst of it all; No spires, no cross bracing and height reduction.

This building now looks like a Bloomberg tower/Times tower hybrid.

Honestly, I'm not surprised by the height decrease. It was obvious since they released the new 2 WTC renders in June so I guess I was sort of hoping the new parapet height would be 1,170 feet but silly me, money is money. This is what happens when you have so many different people in charge of the World Trade Center. You get this master plan (2006) where 1 WTC had the radome cladding on the spire & an outdoor observation deck, Foster's 2 WTC orginally 1,349' or 1,350', and Rogers 3 WTC at originally 1,240-1,255 feet. 4 WTC was the only Tower to get a height increase from 947' to 977' or 978' measured from Greenwich Street. Here we are 9 years later, 1 WTC didn't get the radome cladding & no outdoor observation deck, 2 WTC looks awful but whatever it is what it is, Tower 3 has been a victim of getting height chopped off several times. Hopefully this is the last of the changes made to the WTC. I can't handle any more. If they could change 2 WTC back to Foster's design I'll drink to that but that likely won't happen. Anyway here's to the World Trade Center and the bureaucrats who run this show and in future interviews will defend all their ill-advised decisions over the years.

The core is concrete. Also a full-concrete tower can rise pretty fast.

This thing needs to be given back its spires. What was the reason to delete them?
