You people are making a big deal out of nothing. The x bracing wasn't that impressive. At less this building didn't get a total make over, like tower 1.

^They've also changed the orientation of the side braces, as well the thcikness...
I have a bad feeling that this was planned a long time ago; and that we are receiving the news too late. I mean, there was said that Tower 3 was getting a redesign to bring cost down about a year ago . If the removal of the X-braces was planned during the rework, I'm afraid nothing is possible to do at this moment.

I got to agree there. If the X braces are removed from the final design. Then all the remaining braces on the side of the structure should be remove from the building. Non of this half and half shit. Complete minimalistic design or the complete previous proposal.

On another note some sweet LED lighting at night should make the whole site at night something to awe over.

what a shame, i really liked the design before. The X braces played off the "diamonds" on tower 2 very well. Now there is no character.

I'm much more concerned about that 2020 start than I am about the new renders. This tower needs those UBS keys at the top!

I like the redesign more. I wasn't a big fan of the previous version.

As many people have said, this building has a lost its wow factor and the architectural elements that originally got me excited about this building. Now it just looks like it has taken elements from the Heron tower in London. And to be honest, I prefer the Heron Tower.

... Someone pass round the tissues please?

While opinions will certainly vary, I don't think the negative reaction seen here is representative of reality. Beyond this knee-jerk response, the reception will likely be almost identical to the original design.

It is fun to go back and read old threads to see similar, initial hatred evolve into acceptance and even love. Examples are too numerous to name, but beekman tower comes to mind. Outside of these forums, the EifFel tower and original WTC are good examples of this phenomenon.

Personally, I like the new design. It seems more unique than the previous design. There are many buildings with massive diagonal braces on the exterior. There are fewer buildings with diagonal bracing just near the corners.

Granted, this is just an opinion as well. But take heart when reading this thread. The knee-jerk hatred won't be the general public's perception.

I think the design change makes the new WTC as a complex look better, the buildings look a bit more similar to each other now

It doesn't look that bad to me, but the previous one was a lot better indeed.

I think this is quite true, this phenomenon you speak of. And in reality, it's still a very attractive building. However, in comparison with the original, it is indeed less attractive to most here. Another happening around skyscraper and architectural enthusiasts is looking at a building many people like, seeing its original design, and actually liking the original better than the final. Sometimes it's just very sad to see what could have been. 3 WTC is still very beautiful, but far less beautiful than the original design. It, however, does seem to fit in more with the rest of the complex and gives the whole complex a more harmonious appearance.

Somewhere window washers are saying "Yay!" The old design would have been a bitch to work around.

It was indeed redesigned a while ago, I would say a year at least. Reason? Well, the removal of the X-braces as well as the columns that supported those braces involve a mayor redisign of the structure. 4 mayor columns have been removed, and probably 2 more. Now, on May 2010 the PA was trying to redisign the tower in order to lower costs. If this happened and the removal of the braces was proposed during this period, then they got just in time to start the foundation work (back in July 2010) with new plans.

*RED= Columns that initially supported the X-bracing and that rised to 1,170' above street level, removed on new design.
*ORANGE= Posible columns removed on new design.
*BLUE= Columns that will now rise the tower to 1,170'.

edit: The lower right orange spot should be blue.
