Why do people think that BIG's design being (possibly) nicked means that the spires will come back on this one?

Forgive me if I missed something but I don't see the correlation.

3WTC's crown was redesigned to be more contextually compatible with 2WTC after it was changed. IF Silverstein goes back to 2WTC's original design or even changes the design completely, 3WTC's spires may come back.

Ah okay didn't know that. I just assumed they were being cheap like usual.

When and why was the cross bracing removed? I've noticed it only recently, and without it, the whole tower seems kinda bland. Now that the 2 WTC is not going to be occupied by Fox, I hope they'll at least put the spires back on top.

I would not hold your breath for the spires to return. Removing them was a cost-cutting decision framed (pretty unconvincingly) as an aesthetic one. What was the last time we saw a developer add cost to a design purely for the sake of aesthetics?

I thought the same when I read they removed the spires because of the 2 WTC, it was a perfect opportunity for the developers to cut some cost, but now they're kinda in a nutshell since we might actually see the original 2 WTC being built at the site. I wonder what excuse they'll have...

The spires were scrapped due to "value engineering", cost-cutting because erecting them would be a complicated and costly operation. The narrative that they were removed to fit with BIG's design was - hem - cow manure...

The building was conceived as part of the larger World Trade Center master plan, which the new design for 200 Greenwich will also respect. Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners is designing 175 Greenwich, and the firm sent along the following statement:
The original intention of the masts on 3 WTC was that they would express the structure of the building as it stretched towards the sky. But as the design developed, it became clear that they did not achieve this objective, and did not contribute to the aesthetic impact or functioning of the building. Furthermore, when we reviewed 3 WTC in relation to the new design of 2 WTC, we realized the two buildings complemented each other and the Libeskind Master Plan best without the masts. Therefore, they are not included in the final design.

So, basically, the spires won't be installed on the top of the building...

I know for a fact that NYCC (the steel erector) was not going to erect the spires on the cheap and that because the project had so many delays and was on hold for so long, SP is trying to recoup some of their investment by slashing the costs.
It makes them appear less stingy to pretend that they were only concerned about the look - and you can believe it if you want but as far as I am concerned I would wager that even if WTC#2 gets back to F+P design, the spires on WTC#3 will not come back.

To be honest, 3WTC's spires don't make sense anymore. I wish we had them and the old 2WTC design back, but it's true. In light of the new 2WTC design the spires would look like nonsense. Thankfully 3WTC's crown is already interesting enough to offer a variety between boring-topped 4WTC & 2WTC.
