So basically, we're a democracy so anyone can build whatever they want, even if it's the ugliest building in the world. Riiiiight...

...It's way more complicated:depends mainly of the local codes/culture.
NY is undoubtly a kind of architectural mishmash while Chicago is more unified and classy:5th AV looks like a favela compare to Michigan AV!
Also, many former communist countries proudly maintained their prestigious historic center almost like a time capsule!
Being currently in San Petersburg(my third stay!)I have no doubt Stalin and the likes took care of their legacy:the most beautiful town in the world.

Don't plans (materials, colors etc)have to be approved by the city?

Aesthetics play zero role in the permitting process if it's an as of right building. Just look at all the ugly crap that's going up. Otherwise it could be a totally different story - see the sad story of the MOMA tower with Amanda Burden.

Stainless steel is a great contrast to all the glass. Now if only we could get those spires back......

Indeed, the 4 Spires are the feature that made it stand out among the rest. If only...

Does anyone know why the Earthcam World Trade Center site has been offline for over a week now?

I noticed there doesn't appear to be a place to attach steel in the last upper (2?) floors in the pic from Tectonic. They appear to actually just be walls and not really floors. Will this be the height of the fins and thus final height of the tower?

The stainless steel adds so much, even from far. By the way, I like the greenery on the roofs of Manhattan.

It definitely does. This tower would have been my second favorite of the complex if it didn't suffer the height cut/spire loss. Still a great building, but hard to shake what could have been-- something that would truly stand out.

I agree, especially the X-bracing, could've made the building so authentic.
The tower is still beautiful because they use nice materials.
