maybe they are going for an old "cell phone" look with the Verizon tower. The glass cladding part is the 'view screen' portion of the 'phone'.

so its either art or they just didn't want to spend the $ to reclad the whole bldg.

Only part of the building is being reoriented around office use.

The rest will still contain servers, which precludes them having windows.

At one point, the entire building was to be reclassified and converted to commercial use, but the prospective tenant -and original development team - backed out.

I like the pinstripe effect as viewed from the north.

Those pinstripes are a throwback to the 60s and 70s

Wow! That second photo is one of the nicer ones I've seen of NYC. Nice to see how this project's coming along, hopefully 2 WTC can get off the ground within 2017.

A little too good, imo. There really should be more of a height difference between 3 and 4.

When one considers the previous design proposal for this building, this near-finished product is nothing but a tragedy. This could have been one of the most architecturally significant buildings of this decade. A contemporary John Hancock Center. Instead, Larry Shekelstein chose to save a little bit of money and give New York just another filler on the skyline. This is far from ugly. In fact, it really isnt bad from an individual perspective. However, it could have been infinitely better in terms of design merit, and contribution to the skyline. Such a shame...

Totally agree.. The Twin Towers were so iconic. Towering beasts of the skyline. These buildings are ok I guess but they belong more in Midtown to me.

Hudson Yards project is more exciting to me now.

'Nothing but a tragedy'...let me try to find the world's smallest violin for you.
Get used to the idea that companies develop billion dollar commercial property for profit and not for skyscraper fanboys.
Larry Silverstein is a businessman, not architectural Santa Claus. He put an enormous amount of effort into turning downtown into a very desirable neighborhood from the wasteland that it was and definitely did more for the NY skyline than most people in this city.
To react to your 'Shekelstein' comment, I'd like to invite you to take your hateful BS somewhere else.

Anyway, I think the cross bracing shows up nicely. I know some people were worried about that. We're about 6 floors from cladding up to the taller setback. Any estimates on when we'll finish cladding?
