Yeah, it was elevated, on supports.

The 1377' height was never official because the outdoor observation deck wasn't part of the structure. As ThatOneGuy explained, it was elevated above the roof slab on supports. Only the rooftop height of 1362' (to the top of the hat truss) was ever counted.

Had it been counted then yes, it would have been taller than 1WTC.

Anytime!

Here's a picture showing the roof of 2WTC and the elevated observation deck.

Great photo example! I was wondering why people didn't commit suicide jumping off of it. I can see the barbed wire fencing below the elevated deck.

Now that I know this, is this in any way the same case as the new 1WTC's communication ring not counting toward the official height?

what about condos?

If they cant get any office tenents couldn't they build the tower anyways and sell the floors as Opulent highrise condos?

The short answer is no; the longer answer is that the amenity requirements and zoning regulations don't let you simply swap one use of floor space for another, because commercial structures have different requirements than residential ones. The tower would have to be completely redesigned to be up to residential code, and I suspect the zoning board would not let them even if they wanted to.

I'm really not sure. I'm inclined to believe that CTBUH will rule that the mast (not the ring) is part of the building, as the building was originally designed with it (unlike the former 1WTC, which was fitted with a mast in 1979).

However, the loss of the radome may also count against the building. We shall see.

By hat truss you mean that small hill on the roof where the heliport is placed, right? I saw that in STR's rendering where he compared the two 1WTCs (old and new). How high above the parapet was this hat truss? looks to be about 2 meters

yea you're right, it's still a pretty big building though

I can't be the only one to hope that this thing will never be built in its current design and size. It just looks absolutely awful in the skyline and completely distracts from 1WTC.

Maybe 1WTC will distract from 2WTC...

It is a pity that they didn't do something similar above the communication ring of WTC1...

Yep, and it's a great compliment to 1WTC, as well as the other two towers.

They can't due to the radiation from the antenna.

I was thinking what if they had an outdoor observation deck on the roof of 2WTC then I remember, everyone would just slide off xD

I was gonna say, they could do something similar to what they're doing at 4WTC and have an outdoor space at the higher floors, where the outside of the tower is "tiered" between the diamonds, but there's no room. Those office floors at the top of 2WTC are very small, perhaps a restaurant could go in?

Yeah, the "hump" in the roof is the hat truss. The parapet height was 1,350' (I believe), but the height at the top of the hat truss is 1362'.

Here's another comparison rendering by StR, showing both 2WTCs.

Nice comparison, the old 2 wtc was seperated in 3 parts and you can see that the slanted roof of the new 2 wtc takes 1/3 of the old tower. That's pretty much.
