All four of the main WTC towers could become dated. They all share a lot of common aesthetics. They could also become defining examples of an emerging style. It's too early to tell.

For the record, I believe they'll be icons. But you can't say with certainty.

Just like the Empre State Building has become dated.

Most things have a stage in their life where they look dated, and no doubt these towers will also fall victim to that; but then once they survive that period, they may well become classics - Which I think they will

Always count on SSC forumers to miss even the most blatant and obvious sarcasm.

There is a 'dated' phase from 20-50 years old. After that it becomes 'historic'.

Every time I see 2 WTC renderings or come across this thread I can't help but hear the line from Field of Dreams "If you build it they will come" regarding tenants. Too bad that won't happen.

Larry is basically building 3WTC on spec. Even with his 500k sf tenant, he still has to fill at least 1.5m sf.

^ Yep though I do think there's a good chance it starts filling up before completion. Then 2 will go through the same process... it won't be started up again until WTC3 is finished but once that happens I think WTC2's coming in time for about a 2020 completion.

I hope so. Almost 20 years after the destruction of the old WTC.

Better to do it right than do it quick.

When all four main WTC buildings are finished, nobody is going to care how long it took to get them done. All that matters is they look nice. And they really, really do look nice.

Besides, if we're talking just about honoring the original WTC, the memorial is already finished and is a superb tribute.

I don't think 20 years will really matter in the end.

Exactly. By the way, initial plans for the World Trade Center were made public in 1961. (the one proposed for a site along the East River). The Radio Row site was demolished and cleared in 1966. It wasn't until 1987 when the last building (7 WTC) was completed. From early planning in 1961 to the final stage of construction of 7 World Trade Center it took 26 years to complete the WTC.

Yup, and you could certainly tell a difference in era and design by comparison of the twins and 7 WTC

Was 7 part of the originally designed complex though? It wasn't built in the bathtub and I seem to remember reading that, while sharing the name, it wasn't actually part of the old WTC complex. Same with the new 7.

I consider the new 7 part of the actual complex. Technically the new complex is a bit larger than old due to VSC/5 WTC and 7 WTC.

It wasn't part of the original design. There is an interesting book by Angus Kress Gillespie called Twin Towers: The Life of New York City's World Trade Center that looks at the political background to the towers conception, construction and daily life. Honestly I don't remember much being said about 7 WTC. I think there were plans to build an office tower above the ConEdison substation since mid 1970's but nothing official. Pretty much like the future 5 WTC.

There seems to be steel beams arriving on the south side of 2wtc (a mobile crane is unloading them )

Sorry to be pessimistic but it's probably not for this tower.
