That tower is one of the best new highrises on earth.

If this tower is as good I will be very, very happy.

Feel free to believe what you'd like; I just hope that the sting of 9/11 dies with our generation so that future generations can move on and be... well...happy at the World Trade Center (which is what both Minoru Yamasaki and Austin J. Tobin had intended). I don't know about you, but I refuse to let terrorists spoil a great space and the anchor of my neighborhood. Mourners should not encourage otherwise unaffected visitors to mourn alongside them; they should take their sorrow to the grave for the sake of everyone else. 2WTC is not a tomb stone, and I like Foster's design because it is bold and defiant (unlike 1WTC).

I agree with you. There needs to be a balance though because a lot of people were effected by that tragic day. Foster's design reached that balance for me and that's why I would be disappointed if it didn't come to fruition. In addition the memorial is only visible when you are at the WTC, but the towers are seen from miles away so I like the idea that there are design elements that look good but also memorialize.

I'm glad. Didn't like WTC2 design, it was kitchy.

Foster's design is quite frankly, perfect. This is literally the 'cornerstone' tower of the complex. If BIG is going to cook something up it had best be just as iconic and symbolic.

You are certainly a member of a very small minority! Almost everybody in the world loves his design and thinks it's the most iconic of the entire group.

I'm just having a really hard time imagining a design other than Foster's fitting in with the rest of the site, and carrying the same symbolism.

What I hope, BIGs design will..:
- ...be a visually/ stylistically connected to the other WTC-Towers
- ... still be the second highest tower, so the spiral is still intact
- ... respond in some fashion to the memorial

BIG is good at designing buildings that are oriented and shaped in the context of it's surroundings. I have no doubt the studio would (or at least be able to) pay respect to the memorial site and consider the towers position as a corner building of the complex.
But BIGs projects tend to be very bold and extroverted and stylistically different from it's neighbors. BIG proved (at least in renderings) that they can design striking high-rises. But I think WTC don't need an exotic looking building. The WTC towers are very conservative in design (some to conservative). I am concerned that BIGs tower could stand out too much. It should be clear that WTC2 is part of the complex.

I really don't think a memorial can 'move on'. Almost by definition, in fact.

The new WTC site is not a memorial anyway. The memorial is a memorial, the rest is just buildings. Yes, 2WTC leaned down to the fountains, and 1WTC incorporates the old towers' design. But those are more about harmonising with the surroundings than reliving awful tragedy.

I've looked through Ingles' work, while some of it is very nice and very different, I just don't think his style is right for this project. 2 WTC is not a place for experimentation. It will be one of the most popular, and symbolic towers in the city, and they need to get it absolutely right, and frankly they had that with Foster's design. Ingles has a unique style, it's just not compatible with the WTC. Now of course who knows he could blow us all away, but those are just my thoughts. It's not often perfection can be improved.

I just hope they don't do a deconstructed mess here, they should strike a balance between tribute but also bold, I like Foster's design for 2wtc but it's not awe-inspiring for me. It's a bit meh, just my opinion. The top part is kind of unique but beyond that just not my cup of tea that much. Let's remember 2wtc is the successor building to the South Tower, so it would seem that a bold, interesting, & also functional. We shall see.

Think of it this way: whatever is built there will almost surely outlive the people whose lives were devastated by 9/11. I don't want to make shortsighted accommodations for our emotionally sensitive peers at the expense of our countless descendants who will all have to live with the space when we are gone. The space means something different today than it will in the future, and there's nothing wrong with that. While I believe that 9/11 should always be remembered, it should eventually no longer be mourned.

The only problem I had with 2WTC was that a mechanical floor cut though the diamonds. It would have ruined the 4 glimmering diamonds effect with a dark bar running though them. You can even see it in the above render.

It's sad to think that Foster's design is a decade old now.

Imagine that. A decade old and it's still one of the best imo even for today.

Exactly that's why you strike the balance of tribute and timelessness.
